Smoke vocab: some classic Aussie smoking terms

Australians are world famous for giving nicknames to just about everything. Therefore, it was only natural that with the introduction of herb, bongs, grinders etc. that we were going to create a raft of colloquialisms to compliment these goodies.

After all, don’t most Aussie colloquialisms form from sitting around your mate’s house, hanging out and talking absolute garbage? Let’s be fair, that’s pretty much what happens when you bust out one of the top Australian glass bongs…

So, here are some Aussie terms that are associated with smoking that fine herb:

B

Baccy: Cigarette tobacco which is often used to create a mix, or mixture of weed and tobacco to take away the intensity and create a more drawn out, social smoking experience.

Beug: The etymology of this term is incredibly vague, and this writer can’t begin to trace its meaning back to something similar, but this is a slang word for “bong”, more commonly used in Victoria.

Perhaps it has something to do with the bugle, which in a strange way resembles a bong, no?

“It’s been a hard day – I’m absolutely fiendin’ for a beug.”

Billy: Yet another word for the bong, of which there are probably thousands more amongst different smoking circles. This term probably stemmed from the billy tea which, of course, produced a lot of steam similar to the smoke a bong produces.

“Pass the billy, please, I’m keen for a cone.”

“Sure, but would you also like that cup of tea?”

Blunt: Different to a joint, a blunt is prepared by hollowing out a cigar wrapper before putting your herb in it and smoking it.

“Quit hoggin’ the blunt.”

Buddha: Another word for weed, stemming from the use of the term in old school hip hop lyrics and probably further stemming from the fact that the Buddha was so chilled like those who get uber relaxed when they smoke.

“When I’m chillin, I grab the buddha, get my crew to buys

And watch a flick, illin’ and rootin’ for the villain.”  – Nas, “One Time 4 Your Mind”.

Choof: Just another word for weed.

“I don’t mind smoking choof on the weeknd TBH.”

Cone: Probably the most commonly used alternative for the word “bong”.

“Yo, can you pass me the cone? I feel like you’ve been holding it for ages.”

M

Mix: A simple word for the combination of marijuana and cigarette tobacco, typically ground together using a herb grinder or chopped up to form said mix.

“Hey, can I have a cone?”

“Yeah, but you’ll have to chop up another mix – have we got baccy?”

Q

Qie: A quarter ounce of weed and a typical weed measurement. This is a standard way of buying a good amount of weed as it is typically anything under a quarter ounce which will not get you stung for attempting to sell the weed yourself.

“Hey man, should we grab a qie?”

“Yeah, but can you pay for it? I’m skint AF ATM.”

R

Rader: A term for an excessively dirty, questionable homemade bong, typically made from a Gatorade or Powerade bottle (hence the term, “rader”). These filthy contraptions should really just be left at the wayside for a good quality glass bong as, to be fair, you’re not just filling your lungs with the herb, but also some dodgy plastics that we should all be avoiding.

“Yeah I’ve had this rader for too long now, getting a bit worried about all the harmful chemicals I’ve been inhaling and should probably make the glass switch soon.”

Ripped: To be really high.

“Far out, I am bloody ripped.”

Straight green: When you don’t create a mix using weed and tobacco.

“I never smoke straight green, it always hits me way too hard.”
