Sleep Deprivation: Not Good For The Skin & Health

You’d be surprised that lack of sleep can take its toll on your skin. Yes, you read that right. Lack of sleep will surely lead to dry skin and can also contribute to the sagging of the skin. While people can’t always have a complete 8 hours of sleep, they have no choice but to accept that their skin won’t look as good and healthy as it was before. Luckily, there are medical treatments for those who need immediate reconstruction of their skin like a surgical and non-surgical facelift. Singapore is known to have the best cosmetic treatments as all clinics around the country cater to this service.

Beauty sleep is real, and it can have clear and profound effects on your appearance depending on the quality and amount of sleep you get every night. If you stop sleeping unexpectedly, you can expect chronic exhaustion, hallucinations, madness, and ultimately death – sleep is just that necessary. Even though you sleep every night, it is important to keep your eye shut and have enough hours of sleep, which will noticeably affect your appearance. Without proper sleeping hours, these negative effects can happen to your skin and overall health:

It Ages The Skin

After a couple of nights of improper sleeping hours, most people have encountered damaged skin and puffy eyes. Chronic lack of sleep can lead to fine lines and dark eye circles. Your body releases more tension hormone cortisol when you are not properly asleep. Cortisol, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic will decompose skin collagen in excess quantities. The body often releases too little human growth hormone due to sleep deprivation. Human growth hormone stimulates growth when we are young. It helps to increase muscle mass, thicken the skin and consolidate the bones as we age.

You’ll Gain Weight Easily.

Lack of sleep or sleep deprivation tends to be linked to an increase in hunger and appetite and even obesity. A study indicates that people sleeping for less than 6 hours a day were approximately 30% more likely to be obese than those sleeping 7 to 9 hours. Recent investigations have focused on the association of sleep with a person’s appetite. Reduced sleep time is correlated with leptin reductions and ghrelin elevations. Sleep deprivation not only appears to raise appetite, but it also stimulates cravings for foods that are high in fat and high in carbon. Current studies examine whether proper sleep should be a regular part of programs for weight loss.

Leads to Serious Health Issues

Sleep is an important factor to our health that without enough of it, it can lead to serious health conditions. Here are some of the common ones:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart attack
  • Palpitations

Can Lead To Accidents

Sleep deprivation on the road every day is a great public safety concern. Drowsiness is as long as driving drunk can slow down the reaction rate. Fatigue is a cause for hundreds of thousands of car accidents per year in the United States. This has been a problem among people under the age of 25. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation and bad sleep also contribute to occupational injuries and incidents. Staff complaining of extreme sleepiness during daytime in one study had considerably more work injuries, in particular frequent accidents at work. They took more unintentionally sick days, too.

Can Lead to Depression

Lack of sleep may lead to the symptoms of depression over time. Insomnia, which is the most common sleep disorder, has the greatest correlation to depression. Those with insomnia were more likely to experience depression as those without. In fact, one of the first signs of depression is sometimes insomnia. The signs of depression are often compounded by sleep deprivation, and depression may make falling asleep more difficult. Treating sleep disorders may help with depression and its effects on the positive side.

Can Possibly Increase Risk of Death

We’ve mentioned earlier how sleep is important for health. Some people may not take sleeping seriously, but little do they know, it’ll take its toll on their skin and overall health when they get older. There is research on how sleep habits influenced over two decades the mortality of over thousands of civil servants. The findings found that the probability of death from all causes of people who had slumbered from 7 to 5 hours or less a night has almost doubled. The risk of death from cardiovascular disease was particularly doubled by sleep deprivation or lack of sleep.

You’ll Have a Hard Time Thinking Straight.

In thought and learning, sleep plays an important role. Lack of sleep affects our way of thinking in so many ways. First, focus, alertness, concentration, thinking, and problem solving are affected. This makes learning more difficult. For instance, you’ve pulled an allnighter just to cram and study for an exam, but when the exam day comes, your mind is totally blanked. This happens because our brain is too tired to think and remember things. Secondly, different sleep patterns play a part in remembering things, just like what I’ve mentioned. You can never recall what you learned and witnessed during the day if you do not get enough sleep.
