What Does “Seasoning” Mean Here?

In this case, seasoning doesn’t use spices or salt. Instead, it’s putting a protective coating on the Barebones cast iron.

This is a thin layer of oil or fat. When you heat the fat, it’ll bond to the metal and then convert into a type of plastic.

You should add a few layers, and this way you don’t have a greasy coating, but you have a hard black skin that will protect the metal. It also has nonstick properties that can help while you’re cooking.

What Are the Benefits of Seasoning Cast Iron?

One of the main reasons to do this is to extend the lifespan of your skillet. This way you get the most cast-iron cooking in the kitchen.

It also helps to protect it from the element. When you have this pan, you always risk having the iron react with water and air. That can rust the pan, and the rust could get into your food, which would also bring a lot of bacteria.

This protective layer is also nonstick, so you won’t have food burning onto the bottom of the skillet. This makes it difficult to clean the pan, but it also changes the flavor of the food, so make sure you season the pan.

How to Season Cast Iron Correctly

Now that you know the benefits of having seasoning on the cast iron pan, there are a few steps to take to season it.

First, preheat your oven to around 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While it preheats, put some oil on the pan to coat it.

Next up, you should pour a tablespoon of that into the skillet, but don’t pour too much because you only need a thin coat. Then, take a dry paper towel and rub the oil all over the skillet. Once you’ve oil on the inside, do it on the bottom of the skillet as well.

Next, put the skillet in the oven. The key is to put it upside down and let it bake for an hour. You should put some foil underneath it to catch the oil so that it doesn’t drip into the oven.

After that, you’ll need to let the skillet cool down before you store it.
