Servers to Cybersecurity: A Quick Intro to Building an IT Strategy

No one can argue that the last two years have been life-changing! It has impacted us in many ways, and your IT plan has undoubtedly been influenced.

IT strategy planning is a critical component of your business plan now more than ever. A  business plan must be logical, contain objectives, and adhere to a strategy.

It’s said that preparedness is the key to success. However, it is a daunting task to prepare an IT plan in the future. Find out more about the importance of an IT strategy.

Preparing an IT Strategy Today

In IT planning today, we have to be prepared for many things. But, unfortunately, in these times, it’s been shown that this will be very difficult to do with uncertainty and ever-changing rules.

If nothing else, the last two years have shown us that IT management planning in itself has changed; we need to be:

  • More agile
  • More flexible
  • More adaptive
  • Review our plans more frequently

We have also been forced to use technology in ways we never thought we would. For example, we have become resilient due to new forms of remote work.

Plan to Use Technology Differently

Business and support processes swiftly shifted when the pandemic hit. 2021 showed us remote employment, and we can now work almost anywhere. Despite this, remote work has changed a lot:

  • No more days away at strategy sessions
  • No more off-site brainstorming sessions
  • No more IT service technicians popping to your desk to help you
  • No more automatic software updates in the company network

Today, we are more accustomed to these new methods. Through the use of collaborative tools, we will be able to:

  • Conduct workshops online
  • We’ll phone the service desk and have a technician connect to our laptop from home

This must be considered in future planning. In addition, some of the new IT solutions may take longer to implement.

Previously, we could more easily plan the company’s technology landscape to suit the business. However, today our customers are at the forefront. So it would be best if you listened to their technology needs.

Use Partnerships and Service Providers

Today, we are increasingly reliant on trustworthy, accessible, and available technology.

Nowadays, it will become more critical to partner with service providers who are experts in the fields. The diversity of technology we use and continue to use means we may need to have more than one service provider in our IT Supply Chain.

Plan in Smaller Steps

Today we must make continuous changes to our plans. Goals change. What was the aim today may not be tomorrow? Smaller planning intervals allow you to modify your plans more easily.

Plan for What Ifs

Implement preventive sessions: Ask the team to plot their way through a scenario. Hold these sessions online to leverage the technologies your company expects.

Plan for Agility

The rapidly changing events of 2021 tested the speed and flexibility of:

  • The people
  • The processes
  • The technology

The rate of technology keeps accelerating. As a result, solution providers now offer new solutions, software, and resources monthly, unlike once or twice a year in the past.

Listen to the Customer

Previously, we could plan the company’s IT landscape for the year. However, today’s customers will be more vocal. They will specify the technologies they want and expect you to match.

Planning for Cyber-Security and Compliance

As responsible business owners, we must secure our consumers and data stored on servers. But unfortunately, the remote workforce has introduced new problems, both people and technology.

Test your IT distribution network frequently. Allow for things to change before reacting. You may prepare ahead by optimizing your service providers and supply chain of equipment. Look at this page for more information on IT infrastructure providers.

Keep Expecting the Unexpected

In the past, it’s shown that we cannot predict the coming year in the same way we have in years gone. Predictability is gone.

Governments worldwide will be modifying laws at an incredible rate. So your future IT strategy planning should be set for this as best as you can. Expect service provider network and supply chain breakdowns. They are, after all, under the same strains as you.
