Free Space
You should not make a warehouse out of the living room and you should place it with the maximum possible number of cabinets and dressers. Try to unload the space as much as possible. The best solution would be to hide the storage system, make built-in cabinets, or floor-to-ceiling shelving. And ideally, just store things in a dressing room or pantry, if you have one. The less lonely standing shelving and cabinets, the freer the interior seems.
One of the most effective solutions for visually expanding any space is working with color. Light shades perfectly reflect light, so they help to visually enlarge the room. Shades of white, gray, beige, any pastel colors are an excellent solution in such a situation. And so that the room does not seem impersonal, you can always add bright accents.
Sofa Question
Even a few bulky items can visually overload a small room. This means that a standard set – 2 armchairs and a sofa – is definitely not our option. It would be wiser to purchase only one roomy sofa without armrests to remove unnecessary restrictions. If it contains hidden storage compartments, it will be a nice additional bonus!
An interesting solution can be a small L-shaped sofa that fits perfectly into elongated spaces. But if you are not a fan of sofas and do not plan to receive guests, then you can completely abandon it in favor of a few armchairs. But in this case, it is advisable to choose folding models in order to have at least some room for maneuver.
Competent Lighting
It is important to remember that a chandelier alone is not enough even for a small room. There should be at least 3 types of lighting: general, local and decorative. Moreover, the smaller the room, the more light there should be. Instead of a boring chandelier as the main light source, which makes the room visually smaller due to dark corners, you can use built-in or overhead spotlights, led systems, the main thing is that they give a diffused light.
For centuries, people have used mirrored surfaces that reflect light to visually enlarge space. Our situation is no exception, which means it’s time to decide which option to choose. It should be borne in mind that a vertical mirror will visually “stretch” the room, and a horizontal one, on the contrary, will “expand”. Proceed from your own needs, but the best solution is to place the mirror on the walls perpendicular to the window.
If there is a possibility – Combine
If you are not afraid to move away from stereotypes, then we highly recommend combining the kitchen and living room. The biggest fear of odors during cooking goes away with powerful modern hoods that work efficiently and prevent even the strongest aromas. But from this decision, you will get a significant increase in space, and the living room will become more friendly and inviting.
Carpet Size Matters
Choosing a small rug for a small room is a rough but common mistake. So you will further crush the already missing space. Therefore, when choosing a carpet, do not be afraid of the scope of your imagination,m and the larger the area it covers, the more holistic the visual perception of the interior of your living room will be.
