Renovation Redesign: How to Bring More Style to Your Office Design

Setting up a home office is a pretty basic job – all you really need is desk space for your computer and hey presto, you’ve turned your spare bedroom into something that can effectively be called a home office. Designing the home office of your dreams – one that is stylish as it is functional – however, is a slightly more difficult task that will take some pre-planning and require you to channel your inner interior designer. If you’re someone who is looking to upgrade your current setup from drab to fab, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we look at our top 6 tips on how to bring more style to your office design, so keep on reading to find out more!

1. Get Creative With Wall Art

Contrary to popular belief, your office space doesn’t need to be boring, let alone sterile in nature. In fact, according to Steven Schiavo, a professor of psychology at Wellesley College who specialises in environmental psychology, a well-designed office space can help boost creativity, productivity and motivation. One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to truly liven up your space is with the help of some wall art. Depending on your individual taste and preference, this could encapsulate anything ranging from laser cut signs and classical art pieces, all the way to painted murals or even quirky pop art that will truly make your space shine.

2. Organisation Is Key

Clutter is something that can instantly distract from even the most perfectly designed home office, so one of the best things you can do for your space – both mental and physical – is to spend a day or two decluttering, organising and ensuring that your office is free from distractions. Storage solutions such as baskets, folders and magazine boxes to keep paperwork organised are a must. It is also a fantastic idea to install wall shelves that both maximise storage and give you a space to showcase knick-knacks, plants or any other decor that you may want to display in your home office.

3. The Indoor Jungle

Indoor plants have reached meteoric levels of popularity in the last couple of years and we’ll be the first ones to recommend always having at least a few bits of greenery in your home office. Aside from simply looking incredible, indoor plants can help regulate your air quality, boost motivation and assist you in focusing on the task ahead. Some super easy and low maintenance indoor plant options include the Monstera Deliciosa, Golden Pothos, Ficus Lyrata and any form of Sansevieria (this would be the one to pick if you’re a serial under-waterer). 4. Practice Hygge

Nope, that is not a typo. Hygge (Pronounced “hoo-ga,”) is a Danish concept that encompasses a feeling of cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. If you’ve ever curled up to a book with a warm cup of tea on a cold day, you’ve already experienced hygge without even knowing it. Sounds amazing, right? Well, thankfully that same feeling can be replicated in your home office with just a few simple steps. All you need to create an everlasting sense of hygge is to focus on additions such as shaggy rugs, pillows, throw blankets and of course, natural wood for a simple yet cosy working space.

5. Go For Bold

While we wouldn’t recommend splashing a bold colour onto every wall in your living room, home offices tend to be on the smaller side in comparison to most rooms in your house, thus making them the ideal space to get away with painting yours a bolder-than-average colour. A fresh coat of paint is by far the easiest and fastest way to make a statement in any home office, and so if you feel like your space is dull or in need of change, why not experiment with shades such as navy blue, olive green or mustard yellow? Different colours also have varied impacts on our mood and productivity levels, so be sure to choose a colour that you love and know will get you excited about work day after day.

6. Include A Lounge Area

On paper, lounging and work are absolutely incompatible and seem to be polar opposites. After all, including a lounge area in your home office is without a double going to reduce productivity levels, right? Well, that is where many of us are wrong. In fact, any well thought out office space always leaves room for lounging, and simple additions such as a recliner, coffee table or even a mini-fridge make for a meaningful touchdown space in your home and brings a level of elevation to your office space. Including a lounge area in your home office also ensures that you are able to rest in a “controlled” space, without the distractions of the television in the lounge room or the kids in the garden. Making your office space multifunctional can be a great way around those distractions and is a fantastic way to remain focused on your work during office hours.

Whether your home office is designated space for running your very own business, a remote workspace or simply a nook for paying the bills and organising your schedule, you deserve more than an unsightly desk and chair stuffed into a storeroom. We hope that this article has equipped you with a few new ideas and has inspired you to get creative with your home office setup!
