Reject Modernity, Embrace Tradition – How to Lead a Happier and More Satisfying Life?

A phrase used in image macros to humorously point out the change to an object or place over time, positioning the earlier version as superior. One of the reasons this phrase has become so popular on image macro memes is because these changes are usually changes for the worse, implying that modern times are inferior to earlier times and that the old days were better. While this cannot be proven to be universally true, it can often be argued from an anecdotal standpoint, which makes the phrase even more relevant today than ever before in our increasingly modern world.

We are created for community

God created us to live in a community with one another. We are not meant to be alone. Our modern worldview has painted something else as more realistic—that we must go it alone if we want to succeed. However, if we look at how humans were originally made and what it means for us today, there is clearly an argument for human flourishing that rejects our modern views on loneliness.

Since people can’t be truly happy when they are disconnected from others (whether those people are friends or family), we ought to reject modernity’s embrace of individuality and embrace tradition instead by doing everything possible to create true communities where each person grows in love with God and other people.

We are designed to know God

Research has shown that believing in God is deeply ingrained in our human psychology, and our brains are actually hardwired for religion. For example, recent studies show that religious believers are able to infer that other people have beliefs about God even when those beliefs are not explicitly stated. In other words, people are designed with what researchers call a theory of mind—an intuitive understanding of how others think—and religious beliefs may be one way we use that ability. If you want to reject modernity, embrace tradition—believe in God!

It’s how our brains are wired!

Ancient wisdom can help us flourish

In today’s increasingly complex world of dual-income families, with one-hour commutes and 24/7 connectivity to friends, family and colleagues online via email, social media or video chat, it can be tough to find time for things that are important but not urgent. So much so that many people suffer from what I like to call modern life syndrome—burnout due to high-stress levels from balancing work and home life with modern conveniences. However, there is an antidote for modern life syndrome—we just need to look no further than some of our most treasured human traditions.

Technology alienates us from ourselves

Technological advancements are occurring at an increasing rate, but we’re still living as though our brains were wired thousands of years ago in many ways. The phone you have in your pocket is far more powerful than any computer from 50 years ago (or even 30), but our behavior hasn’t caught up with that technology. We still treat human beings as though they were fragile machines—someone or something breaks down or doesn’t work properly, and suddenly there’s no alternative; sorry, we don’t have anything else. But how long can we keep rejecting modernity while embracing tradition? It may be time for us to rethink our relationship with technology.

Age-old wisdom doesn’t have an expiration date

If you’re tired of today’s hyper-connected world—with its hyper-short attention spans and ever-faster pace of life—here are a few simple ways to reject modernity and embrace tradition. A lot has changed in just over 100 years, but it isn’t all bad. Some things were better back then (at least in my opinion). While rejecting modernity is impossible, you can learn how to keep your brain sharp by doing many of them as often as possible. You’ll be surprised at how fast they add up.

Take risks. Step outside your comfort zone

Most people who are stuck in their careers want something new. What’s wrong with that? The problem is they keep doing what they’ve always done and expect different results. Instead of having a passionless job, why not look for something more enjoyable? Change jobs, jump ship when you have an opportunity or make up your own job. But whatever you do: do something different. Reject modernity and embrace tradition by putting yourself out there every day.

Live each day doing good deeds

It’s not just about giving money or lending a helping hand. Just as often, it means taking time out of your day—perhaps from that computer screen—to help others. By living each day doing good deeds for others (whether family, friends or strangers), you will create a better life for yourself in ways that money can’t buy. Good deeds change our outlook on life and make us happier people. And who doesn’t want that? Live each day rejecting modernity; embrace tradition and do good things every day.

Conclusion

The wisdom of our ancestors can teach us valuable lessons in life. When we stop and think about it, modern conveniences are often just that; conveniences. They’re not necessities. We can survive without them if we have to but is it worth missing out on important parts of living? I hope that in reading about my experiences with rejecting modernity and embrace tradition, you’ve learned how these philosophies can help you improve your own life as well.
