Josh Homme founded his first band in 1987 at the age of 14 with two classmates in Palm Dessert. The band’s style used punk rock and heavy metal influences. Homme took on the role of guitarist in the band.
They originally named the band Katzenjammer, then changed it to Sons of Kyuss, and eventually shortened the name to Kyuss. Their cult following of fans would often drive far out into the desert for generator-powered shows.
Kyuss released four albums between 1987 and 1995. The band is credited as ushering in the stoner rock genre of the 1990s.
Homme formed Queens of the Stone Age in 1996 following the break up of Kyuss. The band is currently active to this day and they’ve racked up 7 Grammy nominations.
The band was originally called Gamma Ray but switched to Queens of the Stone Age for legal reasons. They released their first self-titled studio album in 1998 to critical acclaim.

Homme formed somewhat of a supergroup with Dave Grohl from 2009 to 2010. The band was called Them Crooked Vultures and they released only one studio album. Although short-lived, the band won a Grammy in 2011.
