Lessons From Launching a Mobile Retail Business on a Lean Marketing Budget

Starting a business with no storefront and no advertising budget to match a national brand forces a different kind of discipline. Card Chase, a mobile sports card and Pokémon TCG retailer built out of a converted food truck serving Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus, Ohio, is a working example of what that discipline looks like in practice.

A few of the decisions behind it are worth pulling apart for anyone building something similar.

Go where your customers already are, instead of asking them to come to you. Rather than committing to a lease and hoping for walk-in traffic, Card Chase built its business around showing up at sporting events, card shows, and community festivals — the places its actual customers were already spending time. It’s a model that trades the predictability of a fixed location for the flexibility to chase foot traffic instead of waiting for it.

Let the product do more of the marketing. With a limited budget, Card Chase leaned on hyperlocal channels rather than broad-reach advertising: local event sponsorships, community partnerships, and word of mouth from the in-person experience of ripping a pack at the truck itself. For a hobby business, that in-person moment is the marketing — a customer who has a good experience at one event tells their team, their kid’s league, or their local Facebook group before any paid ad would reach them.

Turn transparency into a differentiator. Rather than treating inventory and pricing as something customers had to ask about, the company built a free companion app that shows exactly what’s on the truck and its price at any given time, along with an honest score and review for every product it carries. For a business with no physical storefront customers can browse before they show up, that upfront information does the work a shop window normally would.

Stay narrow on purpose. Card Chase sells sealed product only — no graded cards, no singles — and every sale happens in person. Saying no to adjacent categories and to online sales kept the operation focused on what a small team could actually execute well, rather than spreading a lean budget across too many directions at once.

None of this is a formula unique to trading cards. It’s a small-business playbook that applies anywhere a founder has more hustle than budget: pick your customers’ turf over your own, let word of mouth do the heavy lifting, and be transparent about what you’re actually offering before you ask anyone to buy it.

Card Chase’s current schedule and live inventory are available at cardchasetruck.com.
