If you are contemplating the same here, we got you covered.
The game’s goal is to pocket as many Carron men as you can, and that is done by using a striker. To pocket, people have different striking styles, and some of them prefer to use their thumb. Let’s talk about these styles in detail.
Various Striking Styles in Carrom Board Game
As we have mentioned earlier that the players have different striking styles to pocket carrom men. It all depends on their comfort level, and all the techniques discussed below are under the international carrom board rules and regulations.
1. Use of Thumb and Middle Finger
The middle finger is placed back with the thumb supporting it in one of the most common hitting methods. So when the middle finger is twisted backward, force is generated. When you let go of the finger, it will discharge the striker with power and smash the carrom men, putting the ball in the pots. Depending on the location of the carrom men, different orientations can be generated by changing the course of the arm.
2. Scissors
You must maintain your hand motionless on the table for this striking technique. Then, lay the middle finger’s tip behind the striker and cover the index and middle fingers. Next, by pulling the index finger back, exert force to the middle finger, then loosen the middle finger while pushing forward to the index finger to discharge the striker with the energy.
3. Use Of Vertical Long Fingers
Instead of laying on the carrom board, the palms side of your hand is vertically in the long finger striking style. The middle fingers should be perpendicular to the board. This technique is used when there is not enough room, and you need to hit the target.
4. Use of Thumb with Index Finger
This striking style is somewhat similar to the one explained above, where we used the middle finger instead of the index finger. The index finger is kept back with the thumb in this hitting motion to generate pressure before releasing the striker.
5. Use Of Index Finger
Put the hand in a steady position on the carrom board with the palm facing the board. The thumb will rest on the board. Now bend your fingers and place the tip of one on the table. To create force, position your index finger behind the striker’s surface and meet the tip of the striker. Push the striker while lowering the tension on the point of the index finger.
6. Thumb Shot
The thumbshot hitting style is used whenever a backshot is required, or the shot can be pulled backward. The player’s hand is positioned on the carrom board identically to the index finger, except for restraining the middle finger while flicking the striker. The thumbshot is popular among players because it is simple to play backward shots.
7. Use of Middle Finger
It is somewhat similar to the index fingerstyle. The only difference is that the middle finger is used to hit the striker in place of the index finger. Thumb is used to give pressure to the middle finger.
Is The Use of Thumb Allowed In The Game of Carrom?
Yes, it is allowed. Depending on your comfort, you can use your thumb to hit the carrom men. Suppose you are a left-hand player, then you can use; left-hand thumb, and if you are a right-hand player, you can use your right-hand thumb. Some players are ambidextrous; they can use both hands but keep in mind that you can use one thumb at a time in-game. Other than this, while applying the thumbshot and other shots involving thumbs, you need to keep your hand still and focus on the carrom men you want to pot.
Concentration is a must while striking as a bit of disturbance can cause penalties and fouls, which you don’t want.
If while hitting the carrom man with a thumb, the striker and carrom man falls off from the board, in that case, your chance is going to be missed. The carrom men will go in the center of the board, and the striker will go to the opponent. Also, apply the thumbshot or back shot if you are confident about it because people often end up pocketing the striker in the hole. In that case, the player has to put one carrom man on the board as a penalty.
There you go; now you know all about the carrom thumbing rules. No doubt carrom is one of the most accessible games on the planet, but still, it can be overwhelming to ones who failed to pocket carrom men in the games. The reason for the same is poor striking technique. Striking techniques affect your game, so prefer the one which suits you.
