It’s never too late to switch to a career in nursing

Although many of us were expected to know what we wanted to do after leaving school, it doesn’t always work out this way. You may have gained a degree, and then spent years working in what you thought was your chosen career. However, it’s okay to realize that you want to do something different. If you want to switch to a nursing career, it’s not too late. Here are some reasons why.

You can study online

With Wilkes University’s Passan School of Nursing, you can study online. So, you can keep your existing job until you complete your studies. There’s no need to choose between earning a living and studying. There’s also an option of three start dates, so you can pick the one that suits your schedule. If you can commit to regular study sessions at a time that works around your availability, you could study for a nursing career.

You may already have caring experience

If you’ve had time to have another career, start a family, or perhaps be there for aging relatives, you probably already have some relevant experience you can build on. Caring duties, whether for your children, parents or those who work below you, all prove to yourself that you care about other people. If you’re considering nursing, this is probably one of the main reasons. It’s a career where you can help and reassure people. You will learn to administer health care to patients but should already have compassion and empathy.

You’ve had time to grow up

Not everyone is ready to decide what to do with the rest of their life when they’re applying for college the first time around. You might have thought that you knew but have lost interest or found that it was different from what you expected. Now that you’ve grown up, you might have a better idea, and have personal experiences of people in the nursing profession who have helped you or someone you care about. This could have inspired you to pursue the same career path.

Your family may be grown up

If you took time off to care for your family, your children might be grown up now, or at least old enough to help out at home, so you can pursue the career you want. They should be able to understand why it means so much to you and encourage you to go for it.

You can do something that matters

Nursing is an important career where you get to make a difference. Your current or previous career might not have made you feel that way. So, if you want to switch careers and work in a meaningful and challenging role where no two days are the same, it could be the perfect career for you.

If you’re still at working age, even if you’ve been working for decades in a different role, it’s not too late to switch. Contact Wilkes University and see if nursing might be right for you.
