Why choose to teach?

If you want a short answer, it’s very simple: teaching is a meaningful profession. You shape lives, you have the power to inspire curiosity and play a fundamental role in your student’s personal growth.

If you enjoy working with people and helping others learn and develop their skills, teaching is a career for that exact purpose. Unfortunately, not everything is the color of roses.

Research has shown that teachers are dissatisfied with some areas of their work, such as the pay (with 51% declaring they’re not satisfied at all), the opportunities for training or developing new skills and the benefits their employer provides (26% and 24% respectively).

What makes up a great teacher?

There are a few qualities that all great teachers share, which is why some folks naturally decide to become one. If you want to determine whether or not teaching is for you, here are some traits that you should look out for:

1. Being patient

All great teachers have pretty much infinite amounts of patience, which means they can handle frustration like pros. If you manage not to roll your eyes when a student asks you the same question for the umpteenth time, teaching might be a fitting profession!

2. Being adaptable

Every group of students is different – every classroom can have its own challenges. From different lesson plans to unexpected situations or emergencies, being adaptable and strategic is fundamental. Especially nowadays, with so many different learning environments.

3. Having a passion for learning new things and sharing knowledge

Great teachers love to learn. They enjoy discovering new things and sharing them with others. If you thirst for knowledge and you love to explain difficult concepts in simple ways, teaching is probably for you.

4. Having organizational skills

Teachers often handle a lot of responsibilities, from lesson planning to grading and tracking student progress. This requires strong organizational skills. That’s how teachers manage to balance their workload with their personal lives.

Some crucial questions to ask yourself

If you’re not sure whether teaching is for you, these are some good questions to help you make a decision.

  • Do I enjoy working with young people?

When you get into teaching, you can quickly discover that it’s fundamental to build a relationship with your students. If you appreciate young people, their curiosity and their energy, this might be a sign that teaching will be a fulfilling profession for you.

  • Am I ready for a job that demands emotional resilience?

Teaching isn’t an easy job. More often than not, you have to support students through personal challenges. More than once, your empathy and your resilience will be tested.

  • Do I consider myself reliable?

In teaching, you’re the professional responsible not only for delivering accurate information, but also for guiding and educating your students in social norms and skills that aren’t necessarily in the class planning. Stay updated on relevant topics and learn how to talk to each classroom.

Is it important to stay safe online while teaching?

Online security is crucial for teachers, and honestly, for everyone in this digital landscape. Educators need to understand how information is handled online, and they need to teach discernment and critical thinking to their students.

Being aware of how to stay safe, what needs to remain private and different protective measures is another essential skill. A good teacher also teaches modern day skills, like practicing good cyber hygiene and staying safe online.

By sharing good information sources about cybersecurity and VPNs, for example, a teacher sets their students up for success.

Teach your students what to do when they’re threatened or feeling endangered online, and be there for them if they need advice.

To sum up

Teaching is a very demanding but rewarding profession for the right people. Before making a choice, carefully consider the pros and cons.

Thinking about the lifestyle, the responsibilities, and the core qualities of teaching, be honest with yourself and be open to learning new things every day. You can make a difference in your student’s life with a good approach!
