Interview: Sarah Halstead talks Acting, Comedy, Podcasting, and More

At some point in our lives, we come across amazing people that leave us in awe of their exceptional skills. Then come the multitalented ones who make us wonder how they can do it all and that too so flawlessly. When it comes to celebrities, it is no different. We have seen numerous artists who are great at acting and singing. But more often than not, they get pigeonholed into a single category. However, there are a few multitalented artists who have made a name for themselves in other arenas as well.

One such talented performer is Sarah Jane Halstead who continues to cement her stance within the world of entertainment. Born and raised in Flint, Michigan Sarah Halstead left Flint shortly after she finished high school for New York City where she studied Drama at Tisch School of the Arts in New York, NY non-matriculated. Whether it is acting, doing stand-up comedy or hosting her own podcast Sarah has the Midas touch when it comes to the entertainment industry. We sat down with the talented artist to learn how she manages it all. Here’s an excerpt from her interview, where she shares her love for comedy, acting, podcasting and much more…

Let’s start with the basics. So, what inspired you to pursue acting, and how did you venture into stand-up comedy?

Sarah Halstead: As far as acting is concerned, I fell in love with the craft after high school. I started off by starring in small plays, and that’s how I grew a strong passion for acting. And comedy, I have been obsessed with it since I was hardly 10 when I used to watch SNL. I’m also a big fan of Lucille Ball, Joan Rivers, Mom’s Mabley and the trail-blazing female comedians that didn’t have the same advantages because of their gender. Even though stand-up comedy came much later in my career, I’ve always felt it was my destiny.

Who do you idolize? Who has been your inspiration in your career?

Sarah Halstead: I idolize Joan Rivers. She was one of the very few female comedians of that generation, and despite not getting the same opportunities, she prevailed and made a very strong career and name for herself. When it comes to my inspirations, the names that have motivated me throughout are Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner, and all the successful female comics who had to trough through the misconceptions that women aren’t funny. Gilda Radner has a special place in my heart not only for her talent but also for the fight she gave Ovarian Cancer and finally succumbing to the terrible disease – the same disease that took my mother’s life.

Being an actor and comedian, how challenging was your journey? What kind of hurdles did you face?

Sarah Halstead: The entertainment industry is so competitive and cutthroat that achieving your goals are tremendously difficult. So, I would say that every day is a struggle. To be honest, I get rejected several times a day, but I’ve developed a tough skin and handle rejection very well. The only thing that would make me quit is death and even then, I will come back and my ghost will live at the Hollywood sign! I’m told I’m too pretty, not pretty enough, too skinny, not skinny enough, too blonde, too American, but I’ve never been told that I’m not good. Ever.

Tell us about your own podcast, Drinking During Business Hours. Also, share some details about the other podcasts you’ve co-created and co-hosted.

Sarah Halstead: I would actually consider my own podcast as one of my biggest achievements so far. I take pride in the fact that I created the podcast Drinking During Business Hours, which still exists today. I interview a diverse lineup of artists about their creative journey while we enjoy a great bottle of wine together. I upload every other week, and the episodes are available on Spotify, ITunes, Apple Music and more.

Apart from that, I have co-created and co-hosted the podcast Jimmy & Sarah on the Sunset Strip at The World Famous Comedy Store in Los Angeles, where co-host Jimmy Shin and I interviewed high-profile comedians. I’ve also co-created and co-hosted a live show and podcast with Darrell Hammond from Saturday Night Live called The Summit. The show was about politics and ran every week at The Hollywood Improv.

As a comedian and podcaster, what tips would you like to give to aspiring artists?

Sarah Halstead: Well, I firmly believe that no matter what you do, it’s essential to be consistent. If you are a content creator, posting engaging content regularly is of utmost importance. Think before you post! You could damage your career if the post doesn’t fall into the current “woke” guidelines.

How do you keep yourself motivated through hard times?

Sarah Halstead: My spirituality keeps me motivated. I listen to my reverend Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith every day. Moreover, positive affirmations and meditations keep me going.

Any advice you would give to up-and-coming comedians and those who are just beginning their careers?

Sarah Halstead: Don’t quit. If you’re passionate about something, it’s going to be hard to develop the skill. Talent is overrated. The only thing that will make you great is practice. I would advise everyone not to force representation and showcases if you’re not ready. People will remember a bad performance. Everyone thinks they’re ready when they’re not. Give it a good three years before you put yourself out into the public. The internet is forever, so think twice before you post!
