Insight into NDIS registration

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new scheme for people with disability, their families and carers. The NDIS will provide around 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life.

To get information, make sure you search NDIS provider registration groups.

Criteria for NDIS

The first step is to contact the ndis registered plan managers. They can help you start your registration over the phone or direct you to an office in your area that can assist you in person. You can also fill out the online registration form on their website.

You will need to provide a number of documents when registering with the NDIS, including proof of identity, medical records and other supporting documentation. The NDIS will review these documents before making a decision about your eligibility.

To become a NDIS participant you must meet the following criteria:

  •       You must be at least 7 years old.People aged 15-64 will enter the Scheme in a planned way over three years. The first stage of this rollout will begin on 1 July 2016 in the Barwon region of Victoria. In New South Wales, the ACT and Tasmania, people who are currently receiving disability support services from state and territory governments will be able to transition into the NDIS from 1 July 2016. In South Australia, people who receive support from an Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) partner or are recipients of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) will begin transitioning from 1 July 2016, with all other South Australians joining over three years from 1 July 2018.
  •       You must be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa.
  •       You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.
  •       You must need support to reduce your future needs for supports or help you achieve greater independence. If you meet these criteria you can register for the NDIS here.

Registration Tips

  1.     Know what you want yourself, not what others tell you that you need.
  2.     Don’t volunteer information that will negatively impact on your eligibility or funding under the NDIS.
  3. Make sure you are getting all the funding that you are entitled to, including state/local government funding and any private insurance policies you may have.
  4. Be aware of where your NDIS funding can be used to purchase mainstream goods and services like housing, transport or shopping.

Once your application has been submitted, it should take less than two months for the NDIS to make its decision regarding your eligibility. If you are eligible, they will arrange a planning meeting with you where they will talk to you about what goals are important to you and how much money you will receive for support. It is important to note that there is no specific deadline when applying for the NDIS.

We hope you have found these tips helpful and have an even better experience when registering for NDIS than you would have had without reading this blog post. If you follow the above advice, you will know the information you need to provide, the questions you need to ask and the time frame in which to do so.
