Inside the Janitor Closet: Essential Janitorial Supplies

Did you know that number of advertised janitor jobs is increasing by 4% every year?

As office space and apartment blocks spring up, the need for someone to take care of them has increased along with it. But do you know what makes a great janitor? A good craftsman never blames his tools, but in the case of the janitor, the correct items are the lifeblood of the job.

Read on as we discuss the essential janitorial supplies.

Mop and Bucket

The mop and bucket are essential to the janitor. While some people may have a large, automated cleaner and buffer to work with, it never replaces a good bucket with a ringer.

The reason for this is that it is not always feasible to get out a large piece of machinery. You may have spillages that need to be cleaned quickly for health and safety reasons. Larger machinery does also not get in the hard-to-reach places.

Many janitor’s closet buckets are attached to a cleaning trolley. This allows them to put their other cleaning supplies on the trolley and keep everything with them as they move around. Regardless of the type you choose, you need to check the mop has replaceable heads and has a wringer to get rid of excess moisture.

Cleaning Supplies

There are several cleaning supplies and fluids you should always have on hand. One of the most important is the glass cleaner that comes in a spray bottle. If you prefer to use organic substances for this, a vinegar solution works just as well.

After this, an all-purpose cleaner will be essential to your janitor’s closet. Follow this with a toilet cleaner and a disinfectant. For safety reasons, always ensure your closet is locked, and bottles are clearly labeled.

Cloths

For cleaning cloths, your best choice is microfibre models. They hold moisture and soak up spillages but don’t give off tiny fibers. This means they are ideal for most situations, including windows where specks can look unsightly and untidy.

You will need a number of these to avoid cross-contamination. For example, you would not want to use the same cloth you use in a kitchen area like the ones you use in the bathroom. Alternatively, hire professional janitorial services who will take care of all these tasks and come fully insured in accidents.

Safety Signs

You don’t want to have people slipping on wet floors you did not mark, then blaming you or the company for their injuries. Collapsable wet floor signs are the best, as they are lightweight and can be carried on your trolley.

Hand Vacuum

Finally, a fully charged hand vacuum is not essential but a great addition. It can help you soak up crumbs and mess fast so that you can move on to other tasks.

Janitorial Supplies

When sourcing janitorial supplies, make sure to shop around. Even though a slight price difference may not seem to make a difference over a year, it can mount up. Stay stocked up and create a healthy system for keeping inventory.
