Inside Overwatch Mission Critical’s Workforce Revolution: An Interview with Founder/CEO Kirk Offel

The data center industry in the United States is facing a dual challenge: an explosive demand for digital infrastructure driven by AI and the cloud, and a critical shortage of skilled professionals to build and maintain it. While the technology inside these facilities is cutting-edge, the workforce development model has lagged behind, often lacking standardized, globally recognized benchmarks for competence and reliability.

Overwatch Mission Critical, a veteran-led leader in data center services, is taking a bold step to change this narrative. In a landmark partnership with EPI, the world’s leading data center certification body, Overwatch has announced a plan to become the first company in the U.S. to mandate full data center certification for 100% of its workforce. We spoke with Kirk Offel, Founder and CEO of Overwatch Mission Critical, to discuss why this “workforce revolution” is essential for the industry’s future.

Q: You’ve announced a strategic partnership with EPI to certify your entire workforce. What was the driving force behind this decision, and why did you choose EPI as your partner?

Kirk Offel:
Early on, we saw the data center industry struggling to meet the growing demand for professionals who can design, build, and operate mission-critical facilities and AI factories. In the U.S., very few certification authorities exist, and even fewer are globally recognized. EPI is the longest-standing global accreditation firm for data centers, trusted by many hyperscale and cloud providers to standardize training worldwide. Their range of options, from live instructor-led training to virtual and on-demand courses, gives us the flexibility to grow and retain our workforce across geographies. Through EPI, we’re helping create a new kind of “professional trade,” grounded in craftsmanship and global standards.

Q: Overwatch calls this a “transformative milestone” for the U.S. data center industry. How does mandating certification for every employee change the standard of service you can deliver to clients?

Kirk Offel:

When the automobile industry first emerged, there were no regulations, no standardized training, and no skilled mechanics, so that workforce had to be built from the ground up. The AI data center industry is in a similar moment today. Technology demand is outpacing the industry’s ability to supply skilled labor and talent. The data center industry continues to grow faster than every other industry because of the demand for technology from those industries. Without standardized training, it can’t scale fast enough to meet society’s needs. Our certification initiative lays the foundation for a true career path, from apprentice to journeyman to master, much like the trades that built America. The future teams building tomorrow’s data centers won’t need college degrees; they’ll need proven skills, verified through certification.

Q: A major part of Overwatch’s mission is helping veterans transition into mission-critical careers. How will this certification program specifically support veterans and career changers entering the data center field?

Kirk Offel:
The military operates some of the most advanced technology on Earth and trains service members through a strict, merit-based system. Many of those skill sets align directly with civilian data center roles. By providing veterans a pathway to civilian certification in what they already know how to do, we eliminate unnecessary barriers, like requiring a college degree, and accelerate their transition. Certification programs are one of the fastest, most effective ways to build a stronger, more capable workforce.

Q: The data center sector faces a severe talent shortage. How does this “scalable model” of training and certification address that gap more effectively than traditional hiring methods?

Kirk Offel:
Fewer than a dozen U.S. universities offer any education related to data centers, and none currently offer a full four-year degree. Even if they did, the technology evolves so fast that the curriculum would be outdated before students graduate. Certifications, by contrast, are built for real-time relevance, they evolve alongside the industry. They take months instead of years, cost a fraction of a college degree, and prepare people for work immediately. We are already seeing this transition in Generation Z.  If we want to help our customers scale, we have to shorten the time it takes to build the workforce.

Q: Looking ahead, what impact do you hope this “workforce movement” will have on the broader data center industry in the U.S.?

Kirk Offel:
The industry is starving for talent. More than half of our workforce, the pioneers who built this industry, are nearing retirement, which I call the “silver tsunami” and analysts estimate we’re already short by over 500,000 people. That’s the real existential threat to growth. OVERWATCH University was created to meet this challenge, a purpose-built incubator to recruit, train, and retain the next generation of AI-ready professionals. We’re entering the Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR), where technology moves only as fast as the people who build and power it. While others focus on the machines behind AI, we’re building the only scalable, trained, and certified workforce that makes AI possible.

The conversation with Kirk Offel highlights a critical shift in how the data center industry approaches its most valuable asset: its people. By committing to 100% certification, Overwatch is moving beyond simply filling open roles; they are establishing a verified standard of excellence and trust that has been largely absent in the U.S. market.

This partnership with EPI serves as a blueprint for closing the talent gap. By combining military-grade discipline with globally accredited training, Overwatch is not just building a workforce; they are professionalizing a trade that underpins the entire digital economy. This initiative sets a new benchmark for reliability and competence, ensuring that the infrastructure of the future is built by hands as capable as the technology they support.
