Importance of Roof Cleaning

Roof cleaning is the process of removing algae, mold, lichen, and moss from roofs. Roof cleaning, not only prevents any serious roof damage but also improves your home’s look.

When it comes to cleaning, many people emphasize mowing the lawn, shoveling the walkway, power washing the deck and siding, repainting, and so on. However, they forget about roof cleaning. Roofs might be less of an aesthetic factor, however, it doesn’t mean that you should not pay attention to it, rather, it is one of the most important areas to maintain. You should always keep your roof clean and sleek.

Here are a few things you should know about the importance of roof cleaning.

  • It prevents ice dam formation

Ice dams basically pieces of ice that form at the edge of your roof during the snow in winters. They form when the snow is not cleaned, and the debris is not removed after a snowfall or a snowstorm. When the snow melts and runs off the roof, it can freeze at the edge of your roof, resulting in a large wall of ice, called an ice dam. Ice dams can create many problems for you. They prevent the water from draining off the roof properly, which leads to further problems. They can lead to leaks, shingles, and roof damage. You can prevent this by cleaning your roof regularly.

  • Prevents roof algae, moss, and lichens.

The roof has a very important function; it protects you and your family from the weather, the elements, and nature in general. It means that the roof is always exposed to things like water, leaves, plants, etc. Many people think that snow and rain make your roof clean automatically. However, even when your roof appears to be clean, there might actually be dirt, moss, lichen, and algae, existing all over your roof. The presence of all such things can cause many problems, they can cause aesthetic problems as the roof might appear blotchy and stained with dark blue and green splotches on various areas of your roof. Apart from the aesthetic problems, they can also decrease your roof’s lifespan which makes you replace your roof much sooner. They can also cause problems to your gutter and shingle as well.

  • Helps in avoiding shingle damage

If you do not clean your roof regularly, it can lead to shingle damage. Once the shingles are damaged, they can lead to more serious problems like mold growth, water damage to the roof and inside your house, decreased energy efficiency, etc. If you get your shingle damaged in winter, it can be even worse as it can cause the water to seep into your roof walls, and more. During winters, if the water freezes, it can cause cracks in your walls and roof. This will not only add to additional costs but also are extremely dangerous.

  • Prevents wood rot

Excess water seeping can lead to increased chances of leaky roof and wood rot. When the water enters into the wood of your roof, it can lead to serious damage. Regular roof cleaning will prevent all this from happening.
