Without C1, how awful is Hu Tao?
At C0, Hu Tao is a solid unit. However, C1 makes her cancels more smooth, gives her more i-frames by allowing her to dash cancel, and raises the maximum number of Charged Attacks you can utilize, which enhances not just her overall DPS potential but also her usability. Her damage at C0 is still more than sufficient for most materials, but the increase to C1 is apparent.
Which is better for Hu Tao, Xingqiu, or Yelan?
Yelan and Xingqiu work best together, but if you can only bring one, Xingqiu is preferable. The two, collectively known as Double Hydro, are exceptionally complementary. They trigger Hydro Resonance to increase Hu Tao and Yelan’s damage and provide Hu Tao with incredibly reliable Vapes. Hu Tao receives defensive utility from Xingqiu, while Yelan offers a potent ramping DMG% bonus.
Hu Tao can only consistently Vape with exact inputs or outside assistance to sustain the Hydro aura when Pre-C2 Yelan is the only Hydro unit. The latter can be a Hydro-absorbed Kazuha Burst or a Fischl. Therefore, Xingqiu is typically the more desirable pairing for Hu Tao as a sole Hydro unit because of its dependable Hydro unit.
Yelan, in contrast to Xingqiu, has a far higher personal damage ceiling with Constellations and can boost Hu Tao’s HP% with her C4. Yellen also permits 18s rotations instead of Xingqiu’s 21–22s rotations. The other two teammates often have cooldowns that are less than 21 seconds in most Hu Tao teams. With everything else equal, a reduction in rotation time from 21 to 18 seconds increases DPS by 16.7%.
Can I still play her to avoid learning Hu Tao’s Charged Attack cancels?
Hu Tao can still perform well with uncanceled Charged Attacks, but if you want to get to Hu Tao’s damage cap, well-executed cancels are required.
You can perform nearly as much damage with C0 Hu Tao as you can with well-executed jump cancels by playing her without cancels and simply spamming her CAs. Uncancelled N1Cs are around 90% as influential as good N1CJs, and uncancelled N2Cs are approximately 95% as effective.
Uncancelled CAs, however, often cause Hu Tao to dash past opponents who are too small to block her. Ther makes it more difficult for her to concentrate on a single enemy in multi-target situations and might lead to her missing consecutive NAs and CAs against such enemies. But, it can also be advantageous by boosting the number of enemies hit, depending on the content you’re dealing with.
