How to use social media in your career:

Are you unsure where to begin? What should you post and how often? Which is more powerful: a like, or a retweet. This is what you need to know to find out about the top social media platforms that are used in professional settings.

Social Media: Why use it?

Social media used to be a fun way to communicate, but that is no longer the case.

Social media has become a crucial part of communication and how work is done, from businesses to governments. The Department of Homeland Security has begun to collect social media profiles of potential immigrants as part of the evaluation process.

You can do at least four things with social media:

  • Find new trends and ideas.
  • Deeper connections with existing and potential new audiences
  • Your work will be noticed and marketed.
  • Your brand can be built, crafted and enhanced.

Social media is becoming more popular. An estimated 81% of Americans have a Facebook account. However, there have been more cases of people getting in trouble for their social media habits. It’s not possible to distinguish the personal and professional use of social media. Anything you post online can be and will be used against your. While there are many ways to protect your privacy and limit who can see certain content, it is up to you to ensure that you remain vigilant. The more serious you take your social media activities the better.

Social media is constantly changing. It’s crucial to stay on top of developments and find ways to maximize your use of available tools. Snapchat and Twitter, for instance, have recently made major changes which are detailed below.

Even if you are not working for yourself, it is important to be aware of your company’s policies regarding social media use. More corporations are revising or instituting these policies.

LinkedIn:

Individuals and businesses should not ignore this serious, professional social media network.

LinkedIn with its 500 million members is the most important professional network. However, it’s often not used as well as it should. When I teach classes about social media, I ask my students “Who’s on LinkedIn?” almost all of them raise their hands. Then I ask “Who knows what they’re doing on LinkedIn?” And most of them fall.

Many people take it as a given and use it in panic situations when they need to switch jobs. At that point, it’s often too late. It is better to learn how to use it when it is not needed. LinkedIn is best used for career management and not job hunting.

Expanding your network and influence:

LinkedIn provides many ways to grow your social media network and connect with professionals in your field. It’s important to connect with people you already know, those you want to know, and those you should know. Your expertise should be displayed on a regular basis through the posting of your own content.

Use the recommendation feature to make and receive recommendations about people you’ve worked with previously. Only recommend people who you can vouch for. Employers take LinkedIn recommendations almost as seriously than traditional referrals. If you have any doubts, it is best to find a way to decline a request for recommendation.

Building and expanding a business:

LinkedIn has many ways for companies to use it, depending on their business. These include recruiting and generating leads. You should also check if LinkedIn advertising features are appropriate for your business.

LinkedIn allows you to create a company profile and build an online community. This will allow you to attract potential customers and customers. LinkedIn’s official guide will help you learn more about LinkedIn for Business.

Looking for a job?

Individuals find jobs through LinkedIn. You can also use the network to search for specific people, companies and job openings. Spend some time learning about the search options that allow you to drill down into companies, people and job postings.

Numbers are important when you’re searching for a job. Take the time to build your network at social media. It is important to be smart about it. Don’t send out invitations to complete strangers with the hope of connecting with them or others they have connected with. Instead, find legitimate connections with people, such as your alma mater. Then, send an invitation to connect with them that includes a personal note.

Keep this in mind:

LinkedIn’s free account is great, but you might want to try the premium version. There are many options available, with the cheapest starting at $29.99 per month. This is a significant amount of money, but it’s worth it if you are job hunting.

Twitter:

Although the number of characters has changed, Twitter is still all about instant connections.

Twitter recently updated its most famous feature, the 140 character limit. It has increased the space available to communicate your thoughts and ideas by doubling its limit to 280 characters. Keep in mind, however, that you can still stand out by using conciseness and strategic use of videos and photos. You don’t have to use every 280 character in each post.

Twitter is more conversational than most other platforms. However, it’s important to know the differences between your retweets and replies as well as your DMs (direct message). You can share and comment on others’ posts by RTs. You can choose to “quote tweet” and add a comment over someone’s post. Simply hitting “retweet”, it will send the tweet to all your followers, without you having to comment on it. Quote tweets whenever possible to make people understand why you’re sharing it.

Replies allow you to reply to other posts and have a conversation visible to others. Direct messages allow you to communicate privately with someone. To be able to DM someone they must follow you or have chosen the setting that allows anyone else to DM them. Group DMs allow for more focused conversations between a larger number of people. Twitter allows you to create a private account (or “protected”), but it is more beneficial to have an open account if you use Twitter for business purposes.

Expanding your network and influence:

Twitter’s instantaneous nature means that you can:

  • You can keep up-to-date with developments in your area of interest.
  • Comment, share and join a global conversation beyond your friends.

Twitter’s live video tool allows you to share video and interact directly with others posting relevant videos. Twitter Polls allows you to give users up to four choices and then see the results live. This is a great way to interact with your network and grow it. Businesses will often run polls about products to gauge customer reactions and potential customers.

Building and expanding a business:

Smart, relevant, timely posts can help you raise your company’s profile, especially when you use hashtags in a professional manner on social media plateform. Participating in popular hashtags that are relevant to your company is a good idea. You can also use hashtags to promote your products and services. You need to keep hashtags clear, concise, and unique so they don’t get hijacked or used by another brand.

Twitter’s advertising platform lets you target specific audiences and reach them to learn more about your business. They also have the opportunity to engage with you and become followers. You can find out more about how Twitter can help you in your online business.

Looking for a job?

While everyone is obsessed with gaining more followers, it’s more important to be able to identify the right people to follow for job searching. You can create lists of influencers according to industry or topic. These lists can be private or public. This will allow you to identify what interests them, what their thoughts are and give you ideas for how to connect with them. You can help answer questions or provide assistance to someone in your industry. Many times, Twitter conversations turn into face-toface meetings.

Keep this in mind:

Good grammar, spelling, and punctuation will make you stand out and leave a lasting impression. It is also helpful to have a clear bio and a recent headshot that clearly identifies you.

Facebook:

Facebook has the largest user base and is loved by both your cousins and companies.

Facebook, with more than two billion users worldwide, is the most powerful and influential of the social media networks. It’s a great way for friends, family, and acquaintances to connect. Although it remains a personal network, most people use it for business and professional outreach. Recent stories on the 2016 election show that the platform played an important role in disinformation and information spreading.

Facebook Live allows you to broadcast live from anywhere in the world. Live has been used by businesses to broadcast behind-the scenes content, answer employee questions, and host other events.

Facebook, like most social media platforms, offers privacy settings to control who can see your content. You can set which content is visible to everyone online, your friends or just you. These settings are often overlooked by most people and can sometimes surprise them when they see photos that were not intended for them.

Expanding your network and influence:

Facebook can be used for:

  • Get connected to influential people in your field.
  • You can share articles and other items to show the world that you are interested.
  • Shape what others think about you

However, posting something does not guarantee that everyone will see it. Facebook’s algorithm decides which content is shown to certain people. It depends on your settings and a variety of other factors. These factors include the relevance of the content to your audience, predictions about whether people will comment on it or share it, and comparing it to other content available at that time.

Building and expanding a business:

A business page allows you to connect with people interested in your work. You can share updates, progress reports and ideas with a wide range of folks who may not visit your website on a regular basis.

Facebook Live is a powerful tool that allows you to take viewers behind-the scenes of your business. Facebook’s robust advertising tools make it easy for you to target clients and customers based on specific criteria. It is crucial to understand how Facebook ads work in order to develop digital marketing plans. You’ll feel pressured to spend money to increase your content’s reach.

It’s all about building relationships with people who are interested in your content. This is how a Facebook business can succeed. As in offline, people will connect with your idea, product, or service if they like it. Check out the official Facebook guide to learn more about Facebook for business.

Looking for a job?

Facebook allows you to connect with companies that interest you and get information about job openings. Your personal network can be used to identify potential clients or employees. If you know what you’re looking for, your family and friends can help.

Keep this in mind:

Facebook has a unique feature called Legacy Contact of social media. This allows you to designate someone to manage your account after your death, but they cannot access your account while you’re still alive.

No matter what your career or business goals are, everyone should follow these online instructions to create a Legacy Contact.

Instagram:

Instagram is more than just a place to take beautiful pictures. It’s also a place where you can do business.

Instagram is a social media network that allows users to upload photos, videos, and captions. It has more than 800 million active users and is becoming an increasingly important part of the business world. Instagram is a must-have tool for visual driven businesses. Instagram is a great platform for any company that targets consumers. We also see older B2B companies such as General Electric and IBM using Instagram.

Expanding your network and influence:

Instagram’s obsessed audience loves visuals and you can use your content here to grow an audience.

You will find the perfect formula for you by being patient and open to experimentation. Spend some time browsing popular hashtags to find the right fit for your post so more people can find you. The same applies to tagging relevant accounts with an @ sign. DigitalTrends has more great tips.

Building and expanding a business:

Instagram Stories allows you to tell a story using multiple photos or videos. This feature is a great way to use Instagram for business. Stories last 24 hours so you should consider the timeframe before making them. You are more likely to create visuals and graphics that can be used on multiple platforms, which will have a longer shelf-life.

Also, you should explore Instagram’s advertising options to see how they can be integrated into your overall strategy. You want to get existing and potential customers excited by what you do on Instagram, so make sure you explore it. You can find out more about Instagram’s business potential in its official guide.

Looking for a job?

Like many other platforms, Instagram job hunting is all about connecting with and listening to relevant people and companies on social media. Instagram can be used to learn more about specific companies and their culture as well as what is influencing decision-makers across different industries.

Keep this in mind:

Many of the images you see on Instagram were heavily created by professionals. It is difficult to duplicate their success if you work alone.

Snapchat:

This social media network is experiencing major changes.

Snapchat was once the most popular network due to its 250 million users, and large I.P.O. Snapchat’s popularity has dropped since March 2017, when Instagram copied some of its most innovative ideas, and an extensive redesign was announced.

Snapchat might be a good option depending on your industry and the audience you are trying to reach on social media, especially millennials or younger. You might want to wait to see how the “Insta-vs. Snap” battle turns out.

Snapchat provides a range of tools and tips to help businesses, mainly based on paid ads. Snapchat showcases the success of a variety of companies using it and has an official guide for businesses.
