How to Teach Young Children Piano

In everything in life, there must be the first step of learning before engaging in more robust activities. A child is not prone to this, and for as much as they may develop a constant love for specific activities, many parents find themselves in a state of confusion.

There are frequently asked questions relating to the same, and some of the questions posted by parents are;

  • At what stage should my child start learning piano?
  • Will I waste time and resources training my four-year-old child on how to play the piano?
  • How will I know that they like playing the piano?

However, all these can be answered in a short duration of time bearing in mind that the child needs to first of all show an interest in the same area. For instance, if they are watching the television, they might end up finding that they can enjoy a lot when the piano is being played by the attention they maintain.

Below are the various lessons that the child should undergoin order to learn the piano effectively;

1. Learning the notes

When we were young children, I can remember very well that we were taught how to sing using fun on numerals such as DO RE ME FA SO LA TI DO.

This became a song, and eventually, we could combine to develop a lovely tune.

Other ways could be by memorizing using the order of animals and on learning that the piano only has seven keys which are repeated over again and again, once understood eventually becomes natural.

3. Use of fingers

Since the fingers are the ones used for playing the piano, it will be more fun to paint the child’s fingers with the letters that should be pressed. Every finger is named with the corresponding key, and this adds more fun to learning and eventually becomes more of a game than a lesson.

Another great way of using fingers is to use the order of animals for instance cat comes before the dog and as such it more comfortable to remember that letter C presides letter D.

This can be done using a form of escalator drawing to help the child understand further, and when this exercise is repeated over and over again, it becomes an easy exercise to engage in.

3. Introduce the Notes.

When the child becomes conversant with the keys, the next lesson should be able to understand the notes.

In music, it’s called the notes family whereby each letter denotes a musical sound in the piano.

Allow your child to recognize and learn the names of the notes, hear the beats and understand their worth in the piano, critically develop listening skills.

This will aid the child in understanding step by step how a particular note sounds when played.

Let them tap the keyboard as much as possible to enable them to understand the sound of each before they are thoroughly acquainted with the piano.

4. Exercise on Finger strengthening.

This is aimed at helping the child have the explicit coordination of the notes to their fingers. Have finger exercises such as the like Candy floss or the Chewy Chocolate bars. When they develop the love for each of these methods, then the piano becomes very easy to play it around.

5. Have them ply the Dice Game.

This adds fun and will allow the child to have a free mind ready to move ahead and learn piano for kid. This may be out of the piano lessons, but it’s meant to capture the attention of the child such that when the real learning kicks off, they will be in a better position to understand.

Once children start understanding the lessons, it sticks in their brains very fast, and they are easy to move along better than even what the adults could do.
