How to Tackle Remote Onboarding Like a Pro

Thanks to the societal effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, working remotely is now more preferable and more convenient than ever before. In fact, more workers prefer working from home than going to the office.

This can help cut down on office costs, but it also means you may hire employees remotely, which means there is now a remote onboarding process.

Start Early and Be Welcoming

Working remotely comes with its perks, but it also has some downsides. It may be that your remote employee doesn’t feel as welcomed without the constant slew of first-day introductions that one gets when going into an office setting.

Still, part of your onboarding checklist should include “pre-boarding.” This means that during contract signing and other necessary steps, you are making them feel comfortable to ask questions and getting them acquainted with your company.

Take time to introduce them properly to the other employees, either via Zoom meeting or through an email. With an email, you can introduce them and leave it to others to reply with welcome messages. This helps your new employee feel as though they are truly joining a team.

Get Them Hooked Up to Your Online Platforms

The next step in a successful remote onboarding process is to get your new employee hooked up to all of your company’s online platforms as quickly as possible.

When you do this, you set up your new employee for success. There is less room for confusion, and you can walk them through each platform that they will be using.

Leave room for any questions they may have too! Otherwise, you can use custom employee training to help you out. You want to make sure the training process is interesting and also collaborative.

Keep Remote Onboarding Collaborative

It can get boring to watch all of the onboarding videos and read all of the onboarding materials alone. For your new employee, try making the onboarding process more collaborative.

Is there someone in their department who could help train them? There could be more interesting, focused ways to engage a new employee in learning the job.

Is there a forum where new hires can speak to one another or have an assigned mentor? When they video chat, can they train through screen sharing? These are all ways to make the remote onboarding process easier.

Provide Great Remote Onboarding

It is not easy to start a job remotely, let alone go through remote onboarding. However, you can make it easier by starting early with your new employee and making them feel welcome.

Then, get them ready with all of your online platforms. Finally, make sure that their remote onboarding is a collaboration; you don’t want them to feel overwhelmed and alone.
