How to Overcome Emotional Eating While Going on Vacation

Eating in moderation while on vacation is paramount to overcoming emotional eating and can become a challenge within itself. With so many foods to eat, going on a cruise, skiing down the snowy slopes, or relaxing on the beach sometimes turns into a fancy feast in which you find yourself exploring different restaurants and stuffing your face with local cuisine. Fortunately, though, by following these eight tips, you can be well on your way to maintaining a healthy diet while traveling on vacation and knowing how to stop emotional eating.

Don’t overdo it

Overeating is an urge that many people develop over time, and it can be detrimental to your health if not controlled. To make sure that you don’t overeat, set limits for yourself in regard to the size of the portions that you are allowed to eat. For example, if you want to try a piece of delicious chocolate cake, then go right ahead, but set a limit of only three normal-size bites.

Customize meals

Most restaurants offer customers the ability to customize orders. Take advantage of this and remove any excess grease or fatty ingredients from a dish to make it that much healthier. Also, don’t forget about one of today’s most popular trends — carb lettuce. When ordering a burger or sandwich, instead of bread, have it wrapped in carb lettuce.

Sample, sample, sample

If you find yourself eating at a buffet, there will be many delectable foods for you to try, and try…aka sample…is exactly what you should do. In doing this, you can try out many food items without overeating.

Walk it out

Performing vigorous exercise probably isn’t very high on your priority list when on vacation, but performing normal walks after meals, or during the evening, can help you burn off some of the calories that you ate throughout the day. Walking is a form of exercise that can improve circulation and give you more energy for the rest of the trip too.

Have a cheat meal

It’s okay to sneak in one cheat meal. Whether it’s a whole piece of chocolate cake or pasta smothered in cheese with garlic bread, one cheat meal isn’t going to be detrimental to your health. However, if you’re going to cheat, at least make it a meal that’s worth cheating for; this means don’t use a BigMac from McDonald’s as your cheat meal.

Pick healthy food choices

Nowadays, restaurants will always provide customers with healthier options on the menu. Take advantage of this and eat from the healthier section to avoid eating greasy foods. Most dining establishments will outline how many calories and carbs are in each meal, so be sure to look at these numbers.

Drink more water

Drinking water will help suppress your appetite, and it will ensure that you are staying hydrated, which is essential to your ability to have a good time while vacationing.

Don’t use vacation time as an excuse to eat more

Eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you feel slightly full is a great way to eat in moderation on vacation. If you listen to your body, you’ll be able to recognize when it’s time to put down the fork.
