Also known as traffic safety education, drivers ed is a formal program that new teen drivers must complete to acquire a driver’s license. The program introduces new drivers to traffic rules and regulations, driving techniques, safety precautions, and basic vehicle maintenance.

Before obtaining a license in Washington State, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age.
  • You have to be a resident of Washington State because your license will bear this address.
  • You must complete an approved drivers ed program and pass the license exam. (If your teen completed a driver’s course elsewhere, you must show that it meets the minimum requirements In Washington State).
  • You must complete a driving practice of at least 50 hours, including 10 night hours supervised by a licensed person.
  • You must have a valid instruction permit.
  • While holding the instruction permit, you must refrain from any drug use.

The rules also require that within six months of applying for a license, you need not have committed a traffic offense.

How To Select an Approved Drivers’ Training Program

Freedom on the open road can only be experienced by those who obey the law. Here are some ways to make the time spent behind the wheel more enjoyable:

Don’t Consider It a Task

As a new teen driver, driving is more fun when you see it as a hobby. If it’s more of a task than a hobby for you, think about it as a reward for a job well done.

Keep the Vehicle in Good Shape

To get the most out of your driving experience, keep the vehicle in proper operating condition. Service it regularly for a smooth drive. The learning journey need not stress you out more than making it fun.

Choose Safe Entertainment

Streaming music, audio, or podcasts in a car is fairly common and can make any journey more enjoyable.

Don’t Let Others Ruin Your Ride

When someone comes too close or tries to overtake you, let them be. Stay calm and focus on your business. Don’t let their ignorance ruin your drive.

Make It Fun but Keep It Safe

Good traffic safety education delivers the necessary classroom and behind-the-wheel training for students. For the safety of your teens, the training curriculum offered must comply with drivers ed Washington State requirements. Driving is enjoyable, and a training program should give students confidence in their driving abilities.
