How to Keep Your PC Running Smoothly With System Mechanic

How many of you get a new computer and leave your start page on the default settings. As much as I love Google search, is that really all you want to see when you start your computer up each day? And what do you see when you open up a new tab? Anything helpful? You can customize your browser start and tab pages to make them work for you.

Chrome settings

If you don’t want to use the default page, you can change it in settings:

1. I happen to like to be able to start where I left off the day before. Did you know that in every browser ( I checked, Chrome, Firefox, and IE) if you go into settings, right on the main settings page, and one of the options is “where I left off”? That is what I use.

So I actually don’t have a home page. My computer always opens to exactly where I left it when I shut it down. All the tabs that were open are still open. I don’t have to remember where I was. I love it.

2. You also have the option, in settings, to make a web page or pages, open when you start your browser. You just type in the URL or URLs into settings and that becomes your start page. So if the first thing you want to see is your email when you start the day, you can make that your start page.

3. If you want a real Start page, where you can add your mail, feeds, news, etc, now that iGoogle isn’t around anymore, there are still many others that you can configure. I haven’t recently tried any recently, but one that looks really nice is Myfav.es. However, you will see that the tab option I talk about below is very similar.

4. This last option is to customize your tabs, so if you do this, when you start up your computer and a tab opens, you should see this custom tab instead of the default start page.

Customize Your Tabs

There are add-ons or Extensions in your browser that can make your tabs very useful. I have been using a Chrome extension called Speed Dial. It is available and works in Firefox as VFD Speed Dial. IE has one but I’m not so sure about it.

Speed Dial allows you to add as many boxes as you want on the page. Each box represents a website. You can add your most-used sites to this page. You fill in the URL, and for popular websites, Speed Dial adds the Logo. When you open up a new tab, you have all your most-used sites, with pictures of them making them easy to see, right there to click to. There is also a built-in search box on top of the page.

I just downloaded the new version of Speed Dial for Chrome, called Foxtab Speed Dial, and it is beautiful and has more features. Now I recommend this add-on even more than ever. On the top left-hand corner of the page, you will see the words, app, and favorites.

The favorites are the boxes that you make. When I click apps, I’m taken to a similar-looking page made for me with many resources I use online. It is amazing how Chrome collected them all since they aren’t all Google sites. And you can also customize the look of the pages.
