How to Get Kids Involved in Mountain Biking

Getting your kids off of their screens can feel like a task. Giving them a fun outdoor activity can make a world of difference to their lives now – and even later as adults. Several studies have shown that kids who spend time in the great outdoors are less likely to develop psychiatric disorders when they grow up. Additionally, kids involved in sports usually perform better academically and build essential life skills like leadership, discipline, and communication skills better than those who don’t.

Mountain biking is a great way to get your kids involved in a physical activity that is a lot of fun and helps them appreciate and connect with nature.

Getting Started:

You can get children as young as five interested in the sport. No, we’re not saying take them up a steep hill – but it’s an excellent time to get them comfortable and used to riding a bike without training wheels. Mountain bikes for children are easy to find once they are about four feet tall.

Once they can ride a bike on their own, get them started on flat roads like Forest Service roads before moving on to easy trails to get them used to ride in the dirt. You want them to enjoy exploring being outdoors and biking before bringing them into the actual mountain biking side of things.

Turn Outings into Fun Events

Mountain biking is a physical activity, and chances are your kids won’t enjoy it. Turn every outing into a fun activity to distract them from it. Carry a small picnic, or play games, so your kids start looking forward to their bike rides together. Take some of their friends along too.

Camps:

If you’re not into mountain biking or want your kids to get a little boost, why not consider a mountain bike camp? Mountain bike camps are a fun-filled and exciting way for your kids to explore the great outdoors, hone their biking skills, and make new friends while at them. Seasoned instructors ensure your kids learn safe riding techniques, balance, ascending/descending, braking and bunny hopping – all skills that will help them progress in the sport.

Mountain Bike Kids – a part of the larger National Kids Camps – offer a safe way for your kids to learn the nuances of mountain biking and enjoy the outdoors.

As a company with 38 years of children’s camps under its belts, Mountain Bike Kids has been dedicated to inclusive, safe, and joyful fun for Canadian kids. The enthusiastic team takes pride in creating a fun environment for kids throughout the Ottawa and Gatineau area. Small batches mean your child gets the individual attention they need to succeed.

Start planning for your child’s summer holidays by exploring the different mountain bike camps, or get in touch with the team if you have any queries.
