If you or someone you love is currently battling substance abuse, you’re not alone. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, almost 20 million American adults battled some form of substance abuse disorder in 2017. In the same year, only 19% of those individuals sought treatment. Just deciding to seek help is a big first step and one you or your loved one should be proud of.

The process of choosing the right treatment center isn’t always easy. You have a lot of questions and concerns, and you want to make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. There are likely more options than you expect, and it’s possible to design a treatment plan that’s right for you or your loved one. In this guide, we’ll help you during this confusing time so you choose the absolute best path for your road to recovery.

  • Does Medicare Cover Senior Substance Abuse?
  • Consider Specialty Treatment

Choose Between Inpatient vs. Outpatient Treatment

The first big question you’ll need to ask is whether inpatient or outpatient treatment is right for you. There is a lot of confusion about what these two options mean. Though rehab marketing aims to make this process clearer, it sometimes takes more information to know which option is best for you.

With an inpatient program, you’ll be housed full-time at a treatment facility. The first phase usually involves a doctor-observed detoxification period where the patient is weaned of the substance safely. The second phase will involve therapy and peer support. Patients will be taught real-world coping skills to help them regain the skills they need to rejoin society at home and beyond.

On the other hand, an outpatient option allows patients to visit a clinic regularly while residing at home full-time. Patients meet with counselors regularly who help with the detox process and overcoming the psychological effects of addiction. Some meet with counselors and peers for up to 8 hours a day while others meet for only 1 or 2 hours a day.

Does Medicare Cover Senior Substance Abuse?

Substance misuse amongst retirees is also not unheard of. Many seniors get their prescription medication through Medicare Part D. On their own, these medications are controlled and seldom pose a risk. However, these drugs are often combined with easily accessible over-the-counter remedies that, when used together, may result in drug abuse and dependence.

Fortunately, Medicare does provide for substance abuse treatment, based on the following conditions:

  • The patient’s doctor must believe and recommend that it’s medically necessary
  • The treatment must come from a healthcare provider within the Medicare network

The Medicare substance abuse initiative covers a broad-spectrum of treatment. It includes most medications, a screening program, and both in- and outpatient treatment.

Original Medicare, consisting of parts A and B, and Medicare Advantage provide substance abuse coverage. However, should a patient receive this type of treatment, they’ll be subject to paying copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance.

Consider Specialty Treatment

Different treatment centers have different specialties. Depending on the severity of your condition, you might want to consider seeking specialized care. You’ll want to look for evidence of the long-term success of these rehabilitation patients regardless of specialties.

You’ll quickly discover there are thousands of different therapy and treatment options for all types of addictions. This is great because there’s truly something that will work for everyone, but it also means it’s harder to navigate to find the right program.

Decide on the Duration

Different programs have different durations. Most last anywhere between 30 and 90 days, but there are extended or shortened programs available as well. Most experts point to longer stays between 60 and 90 days as being the most successful. A month or under isn’t usually enough time to adequately work on any significant issues, but it might be perfect depending on your situation.

Another aspect to consider is the cost of longer programs. You might also have family, professional, or financial constraints that lead you to choose shorter programs. Ultimately, don’t let these things get in the way of you getting the help you need.

Look for Amenities

Finally, don’t forget to look into amenities. Many rehabilitation treatment centers come with some of the best top-of-the-line amenities. Many are better than four-star resorts with their accommodations. On the other hand, some are functional rather than luxurious.

What type of amenities appeal to you and your needs is a personal decision. You want to be comfortable during this difficult time, so be sure to prioritize your standard of living and wants during your decision-making process.

Get the Help You Need

Though it often feels hopeless, help is here for you or your loved ones. Despite common misconceptions, addiction is considered to be a highly treatable disease. Recovery is not only possible but likely, as long as you seek treatment when you need it.

With so many options available, it’s often challenging to choose the right treatment center for you or your loved one. Cut through the noise with the guidance above. With an informed, targeted approach to your search, you’ll find help in no time.
