So, with this in mind how can you ensure a successful career in the construction industry?

Develop Your Soft and Hard Skills for Well Roundedness

As you can see from the above it’s important to have not just skills directly related to the industry, but employers are also looking out for individuals who have a varied soft skill set. This is because the work landscape is constantly changing and having some who can work together and learn to adapt is important. Depending on which state you’re in, you may need the right qualification in order to apply for your builders license. As a licensed builder, effective communication with your customers and co-workers is vital.  When looking to upskill, don’t just look into training courses; also look at the types of software used when it comes to storing information and contracts, learn all the important functions in the Microsoft suite, and do research on how to cultivate a good working environment. Having these skills shows your employer that you are proactive and innovative, making you a huge asset to any company you work with. Another important skill to have is the organisation. Even in the construction industry, being responsible and organized can save everyone a lot of time and money and just makes you easier to work with. If you have examples of when you have shown this skill, whether at home, in previous positions, or volunteer work, make sure you highlight them and bring it to the attention of your potential employer. Your main goal is to showcase that your skills go beyond just the technical and hiring you means hiring someone that has a holistic approach to whatever task is at hand.

Invest in Marketing

Whether you’re a local construction business owner or an individual hoping for work in the construction industry, there is a place for you when it comes to marketing—especially digital marketing. Even if there is a high demand for these services, you should never depend on luck and invest time and money into getting your brand or your presence out there. For business owners, this means investing in relevant digital marketing tools. Make sure your business has a user-friendly website; your website content should be engaging, informative, and optimized to fit SEO practices. And even a construction company can make sure of social media platforms to connect with new and existing customers. If you are an individual looking for jobs in the industry, you too need to market yourself. Set up a LinkedIn profile to connect with employers that are hiring. If you’ve just completed a trades recognition in Australia, update your profile to show that. To go the extra mile, don’t stop at an update, create a post detailing your experience with those skills. With high demand also comes a lot of people and business looking to tap into that demand, investing in marketing helps you get to the top of that pool.

Network

Finally, networking is a great way to tap into the construction industry. And one of the best ways to network is to join and be active in the local chapter of a trade association. You will get to meet loads of businesses, owners, and workers alike with a wealth of knowledge and experience. Being active and giving back to your community is another great networking opportunity. Not only are you helping those around you, but there’s also the added bonus of getting your name or your brand to reach more people.

By putting in the effort and doing your best, there is a high chance to reap what you sow.
