How Often to Shampoo to Avoid Hair Loss

We would do anything to keep our hair the same length and thickness our whole life. But unfortunately, it is often not possible in real life. From age and genetics to environmental damage, we cannot keep our hair the same quality throughout our life. However, there are still plenty of steps we can take to minimize hair loss and keep our scalp as healthy as possible. While medications like Generic Finasteride or Propecia may seem like the first line of treatment, there is a lot else that you can do before it, like how often to shampoo your hair.

The question of shampooing is a regular one, and there is a lot of uncertainty about it. Washing the hair is one of the first things that pop into our minds when we hear about scalp care. However, the perfect solution, especially for people experiencing hair loss, is not as simple as a specific number of times. Several factors, such as skin type or hair loss type, can change what shampoo or cleaner you should be using and how often to apply it to your hair.

How Does Hair Grow

Our scalp is responsible for supplying hair follicles with oxygen and nutrients. Our scalp alone has over 100,000 hair follicles. Hair begins growth from the bottom of the hair follicle. It then pushes through the skin and passes an oil gland. The hair strand will grow until it hits the last stage, where it sheds and falls from the scalp. We lose 50 to 100 strands every day. These strands are replaced by new ones. People with hair loss quickly notice more hair falling than being grown.

Scalp & Hair Types

The type of skin and scalp you may have will determine how much oil your skin has, which dictates how often you can shampoo your hair. There are many different kinds of skin, and you may not have the same skin type as your parents. If you have dry hair, you may not need to wash your hair as much as someone who has a lot of grease build-up. Over-washing your hair may dry it out, especially if your skin type is already prone to dryness. The grease in our hair is sebum, which is secreted by hair follicles to act as a protective layer which prevents damage from the environment.

On the other hand, if you have oily skin and hair, you will need to wash your hair 3 to 4 times a week without washing away all the oil. Therefore, people with oily hair need to avoid hair chemicals in their shampoo and other skin care products. Using all-natural products will allow you to wash your hair several times a week while keeping them safe from chemical wear and tear and avoiding any thinning or further hair loss.

Below is a quick guide detailing the common types of hair followed by recommended hair care routine.

Oily hair:

Typically every day. This is to avoid oil build-up unless your hair is too long.

Dry or damaged hair:

Every 5 to 7 days. This is to wait for your natural oils to mix up in your hair. Dry or damaged hair is a sign of over-shampooing.

Wavy or curly hair:

Depending on how dense your hair is, you should be shampooing every 4 to 5 days. This, too, is an estimation. You can experiment by shortening or lengthening the time between washing by 1 or 2 days to see how your hair reacts.

Coily hair:

Ideally, once per week. It is also essential to always follow any wash with a conditioner. The conditioner you use should also be specific to hair type.

Fine or thin hair:

Fine hair typically needs to be shampooed every other day. This provides it with the moisture that thin hair usually requires to grow. You can also add a cleaning every other week to clean any oil buildup.

Thick hair:

Thick hair usually does have a lot of oil build-up, but they hold moisture for longer. So depending on your skin type, you may only need to wash it once a week.

Diagnosed Hair loss

Depending on how much hair you think you are losing, you may need to consult a dermatologist. A doctor will help you reach the root cause of your hair loss. Depending on the type of hair loss you are diagnosed with, the solution may not be as simple as switching your shampoo or changing how many times a week you wash it.

Our genetics play a significant role in how soon we will begin to see hair loss. For example, if your parents or other male relatives have standard male pattern baldness, you will too. Other common causes of Hair Loss can include hormonal disorders, autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and various skin conditions.

Hair Loss Treatment

Your treatment plan varies depending on the cause of hair loss. You may need to supplement and change your diet. If it’s temporary hair loss, you may be asked to wait it out to avoid stressors and damage to your hair.

Hair Loss Medication.

Finasteride UK (Generic Propecia) is a drug most commonly used for Hair Loss treatment. It is readily available and you can buy Finasteride Online. If a deficiency of nutrients is found to cause your Hair Loss, you will be given supplements and told to fix your diet. Other options like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), mesotherapy, cellular treatments, and stem cell and hair transplants may also be used for more advanced treatment.
