How Long It Takes To Renovate Every Single Room In Your House

It may take three months to completely renovate some rooms, while it can take as little as three weeks for others. The construction industry has a poor reputation since jobs are often left unfinished.

It can feel like an age when there is dust on everything and unfamiliar faces are roaming around your home. However, knowing how long it takes for a house restoration is essential for keeping everyone’s sanity during construction. Time is of the essence!

A reliable contractor will create a timetable for you, outlining the beginning of the project and the steps to be taken over the subsequent weeks.

“Demo begins on this date, and so on,” Osholding explains. “Communication is key, and homeowners need to know that a kitchen, bathroom, or addition remodel of any magnitude will cause significant disruption to their house for four to sixteen weeks.”

It’s important to keep in mind from the get-go that delays are normal, and that, especially for large projects like room additions or complete kitchen remodels, there will probably be days when not much happens because the contractor is waiting for an inspection, materials, or subcontractors. Most contractors factor extra waiting days or delays into the overall timeline.

These additional factors may also contribute to delays: Products being on backorder, such as kitchen cabinets or a certain tile that is out of stock, which prevents their timely delivery; subcontractors’ running behind schedule, such as an electrician who is working on another project; bad weather, which can affect outdoor projects like building a deck, constructing an addition, or installing a new roof; unexpected problems, such as mould or rotting wood inside the walls, which can’t be detected until the demolition start; Homeowners who procrastinate on making material selections put a crimp in the project’s delivery timeline.

What Is the Timeframe To Renovate a Room?

Timelines can be impacted by a number of factors, including project size and complexity, as well as the availability of resources and manpower. This is why installing new cabinetry and fixtures in a bathroom can take just three weeks, while installing new tile and a heated floor could take several months.

Louis M. Weiher, CR, CCP, president, owner, and general manager of Carmel Builders, Inc. in Menomonee Falls, Wis., states, “The process of remodelling isn’t just pulling out the old and putting in the new.” “Homeowners need to understand, and often don’t, that demolition isn’t the first step in the remodelling process. When you decide to work with a designer or design-build business, the process officially begins.

Once construction begins at the site, remodels typically take the following timeframes to complete:

Enlargement of a Preexisting Space

An extension takes the most time to finish compared to any other project. The plus side is that, unlike other projects, you can keep using your kitchen and bathroom during the renovation. It’s the same as when you construct a new house, except more compact. The weather can be a major source of delays. Osholding warns that “you can be at the mercy of the weather.” If it’s extremely cold, it could delay goods deliveries and prevent workers from laying concrete or constructing frames.

Remodeling the Kitchen

Changing the location of major appliances like the range, refrigerator, and sink might increase the duration of the project due to the need to relocate or construct new water and gas lines, electrical outlets, and plumbing. Custom cabinets take two to four weeks to arrive because “rooms have to be measured,” as Osholding puts it. High-end countertops are measured with a laser after the base cabinets have been placed to ensure a perfect fit. The time required to have the countertops cut to size is a major inconvenience. When the countertops are put in place, there will be no gaps because the laser has measured every ding and bump.

Redesigning the Restroom

The prevalent use of tile in bathrooms can be time-consuming and restrict the room’s use for multiple people. Osholding warns that “tiling might be a long process.” There’s plenty for creativity with niches and tiling options. Since each component may need to be individually measured and cut, this process can take many weeks. The final step is to grout the tile and wait for it to dry. She also mentions that the installation of the tub and walls adds time, and that bespoke glass shower doors, which are quite popular, take even longer because they cannot be measured and ordered until the tub is in place.

Renovating the Basement

The cost of constructing an expansion can be avoided by finishing the basement instead. Whether or not the basement has been partially finished (internal walls framed, bathroom roughed in, etc.) and the intended use of the space may greatly affect the time and money required to complete the project. According to Osholding, “the procedure will take longer if the builder had one vision and you have another on how you want to use the space, such as changing the bathroom.”

Hang Out on the Deck for a Week or More

It takes a crew of three or four workers a week to build a deck. Lengthening the schedule may be necessary if stairs are included, if the deck is multi-level or wraps around the house, if a whirlpool is installed, or if the house does not already have a ledger board.

Time Required to Replace a Roof: Two Days

A new asphalt shingle roof may be built on even a large house in only a few days. The installation time for alternative roofing materials is greater.

Remodeling Timeline

It doesn’t matter what part of the house you’re renovating or how extensive the changes are, the procedure and schedule are the same. Check out this summary to get a feel for what you’re getting into.

  • Specify a price and a strategy. Knowing your goals for the redesign is essential. Fresh new style? Better performance? Visit an architect, designer, or general contractor with your objectives and needs in mind, as well as any magazine clippings or online images that served as inspiration. And know exactly how much money you can and will spend on the undertaking.
  • It’s important to choose a reliable contractor and hire them. Choosing a capable contractor is the first step to a satisfying end. First, solicit referrals from family and friends; secondly, engage a professional who is well-known in the field, has a solid reputation, specialises in the kind of work you need done, and whom you feel comfortable having in your home on a regular basis.
  • Put pen to paper. In it, you should detail everything from when you’ll be paid to how the project will be completed, as well as the materials you’ll be using, when you’ll begin and when you’ll finish it, how long it will take, and how you’ll handle any necessary adjustments. Make sure the rules you want observed, such as the workers not using your bathroom or not starting work before 8:00 AM, are written into the contract.
  • You need to get a permit and get the land ready. Building permits are required prior to beginning most types of professional remodelling. In the event that lumber, materials, and a dumpster show up in your driveway, it’s a good bet that construction is going to begin. If you’re upgrading your kitchen, now is the time to clear everything out of the cabinets and drawers.
  • Clear out the junk. Demolition is the initial stage of the real renovation process. Countertops, cabinets, bathtubs, and even walls are all torn out and rebuilt while remodelling. When doing major renovations, it is common practise to remove everything from a room, including the drywall, and start over from scratch. Only the studs and the fixtures and wiring hidden within them are left.
  • Make a fresh frame for it.
  • Trenches or holes must be dug before concrete can be poured to form the footings or foundations for a new room or deck. Framing is done on any new rooms, walls, or expansions. You will notice significant progress on your house improvement during this time.
  • New mechanicals should be put into action.
  • Plumbers are called in at this stage to install gas lines for indoor and outdoor cooking and to run new pipes for a sink, bath, or refrigerator. New ductwork and registers are installed by HVAC professionals, while wires for new lighting and electrical outlets are run by electricians. There isn’t going to be any major everyday advancement at this time.
  • Do not leave the walls bare. What comes next once the mechanicals are approved and the exterior walls are insulated depends on the nature of the project. The tub, in the case of bathrooms, would be installed thereafter. Drywall or another wallcovering material is used for all other jobs. The next step is to set up the cabinets and the countertops.
  • Get everybody in here! When the flooring, moulding, and wall tiles are all in place, the room finally feels complete. As soon as the flooring is laid, you’ll know you’re almost done.
  • Finish it up by adding the finishing touches. Finishing touches include new paint or wallpaper, the installation of new light switches and faucets, and the replacement of register covers. Rubbish is cleared away, and the area is cleaned up.
