How Do You Maintain An HD Lace Wig

All good things must be taken care of, for them to last long and remain in good health. The same logic applies to HD lace wigs.

HD lace wigs are one of the most sought-after and revered wigs, so if you have one you definitely want to keep it looking good. Because a good HD lace wig equals a top-notch hair game.

So, how can you maintain your HD lace wig to prolong lifespan? Keep reading to find out.

Store Them Properly

The same way you would store your clothes or shoes in the closet, wardrobe, or cabinet, likewise your wigs. You shouldn’t hang your wig on a nail, door handle, or chair. Neither should you squeeze your wigs and keep them in a closet.

If you want to store your wigs for a short period, you can place them on a mannequin head, or hair stand.

But, if you want to store your wig for a long period in; fold it in half from ear to ear, part it in the center before placing it in its original plastic packaging, or place it in a small piece of tissue paper at the crown of the wig to help it keep the wig’s shape throughout storage. You can place your wig in a plastic bag or container when storing it for a long. Some people like to fold their wigs and place them in hair nets before storage, if this sounds like you, you are doing the right thing.

However, it is not compulsory to place a hair net over your wig before storage.

Don’t store wet, or moist wigs. It doesn’t matter if the wig is wet because of water or hair products. Moisture can cause mold or mildew to grow on your wig and that will inadvertently ruin it.

No Continuous Exposure To Heat

Yes, hot combs, and stretchers are the best things to style and restyle your hair with. They give your wig the desired look, curl or bounce. But continuous exposure to heat can damage your HD lace wig. Your hair could get heat damage, start breaking, falling apart, become brittle, develop split ends and lose its natural shine.

Remember that although it may be a human hair wig, it’s not your own natural hair so any damage done is irreversible. So ditch the curling irons, flat irons, blow dryers, and whatnot.

So sometimes it is good to try non-heat alternatives to styling your hair. You could use hair rollers- they come in different sizes and even shapes to help you achieve the look you desire.

It is also best to air-dry your wig.

No Swimming Or Sleeping

Sleeping with your HD lace wig is unadvisable, as the wig could get knots and tangles in it while you sleep. And the lace could get all mangled up. If your wig is installed ensure to sleep with a satin bonnet or satin scarf securely tied around your head.

Swimming exposes your HD lace wig to chemicals that can cause it to dry out like chlorine. Sea salt can also damage your wig. It can cause damage to the wig cap and make your hair frizzy and pretty dry. This dryness can lead to knots that combing or brushing can’t fix or undo.

However, if you have no choice but to swim with your wig, please ensure to put on a tightly fitted shower or swimming cap.

Remove Glue Properly

Obviously, you are going to install your HD lace wig. But the problem now is taking it off. Now you can’t just rip it from your head, that’ll be extremely dangerous. You would destroy the wig, the lace, and your hairline. So you must properly and cautiously remove or uninstall the HD lace wig.

There are several things you can use to properly remove lace front glue. You can use:

  • Lace Wig glue remover
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Acetone
  • Vaseline
  • Cream or oil

Once you decide which option is best for you, it’s time to apply it to your HD lace. First, you must do a patch test to ensure you are not allergic to the aforementioned products or their ingredients. Once the patch test is concluded without any reactions, you move on to the next step.

Now, you apply the product to the HD lace front. Start from the back to the front. After applying the product and letting it seep into the glue for some minutes, you can start to pull the wig. But gently, to prevent any tears. Carefully tug at the wig and pull it off slowly.

Once you have the wig off, wash off any glue residue on your head with soap and water.

Clean The Lace

After uninstalling your HD lace wig it is only normal for there to still be some traces of glue on the lace. Before you wash or do anything else with the lace, it is important that you clean the lace first.

When you are sure the lace is glue residue free then you can wash it.

Choose The Correct Hair Product

It is essential that you use lightweight, odorless and mild products with no parabens, sulphates, alcohol, and mineral oil. Even when picking your hair oil, look for products that don’t have any of the above ingredients. These ingredients will weigh down your hair and cause it to tangle and dry out.

Your shampoo should adhere to these criteria. When picking a shampoo for your HD lace wig, pick one with few ingredients in it.

While picking your conditioner don’t pick a leave in conditioner. HD lace wigs do not need leave in conditioner. Only pick products that will soften your hair.

Another good product to apply to your hair is heat protectant. Yes, we previously said to avoid all heat styling tools but it is still important to apply a heat protectant to your wig, especially if you are going outside.

It is also essential to use cold water. Hot and even warm water can have some adverse effects on your wig, so ensure you use cold water.

To make things easier, ensure any product you plan on purchasing for your hair is salon approved. But it won’t hurt to still check the ingredients.

Comb The wig Before Washing

Before you start washing your wig, comb through it with a wide-toothed comb. Do this gently, as you try to dislodge any tangles in the hair. You can run your fingers through it to ensure the hair is tangle and knot free.

Don’t Wash The Wig Too Often

Now the decision to wash your wig regularly is personal. Some people may like to wash theirs every two weeks or once every month.

Whichever works for you is fine. However, if your wig is starting to feel sticky or dry, it’s time to give it a wash.

But don’t wash your wig everyday. Washing your wig every day is completely unnecessary, and will cut short its lifespan.

Wigs are lifesavers, especially wigs with HD lace and this is why you must take very good care of them. Yes, maintenance isn’t easy but that is the only way you can rock your high-quality wig for as long as you want.

So safely and strictly adhere to the points given in this article and maintaining your wig would not be as hard as you may think.
