You have a leaky pipe. And to further compound issues, you can’t tell or pinpoint WHERE the leak is coming from. But don’t worry, you can find out the source of your problem. A quick search for plumbing sandy ut services can lead you to a reputable pro like Pando Plumbing – the first step to resolving your issue.

Perhaps, you’ve heard of leak detection systems before. Or maybe you haven’t. Even so, wouldn’t it be great to find out how such systems work? If you’re curious, you’re on the right page.

Let’s examine how such systems work. Then, we’ll discuss a few types of leak detectors to help you deal with a potential plumbing issue in your home in no time.

The Inner Workings of a Leak Detection System

The idea behind a leak detection system is simple. They check your home’s water flow and pressure while looking for irregularities. If there’s a sudden drop in pressure or water flow, your water system might have a leak somewhere.

Most systems use sensors to detect these changes. The sensors are placed throughout your home – usually, near areas where leaks are most likely to occur, such as near water heaters, dishwashers, and sinks. Others use a mechanical turbine to measure water flow through your pipes.

Some leak detection systems also use special software. This software receives data from the sensors to create a virtual model of your plumbing system. By doing this, the system can more easily identify changes in water pressure or flow.

Your plumber may also install a moisture-sensing system in your home. Such a leak detector is ideal for finding leaks in hidden areas, such as behind walls. These devices work by detecting changes in moisture levels. For instance, if there’s a sudden increase in moisture on your floorboards, the system’s valve shuts off the water to prevent further damage.

You may also go for a mechanical system. In that case, the leak detection system will use an impeller placed in the water line. This impeller measures the speed and volume of water as it flows through your pipes, and the data is then transmitted to a display. A sudden change in the water pressure or volume sometimes indicates a leak. Typically, we use water in intervals. But, if the system detects sustained use, it may point to a leak in your plumbing.

By informing you of a potential leak, such a system lets you nip a plumbing issue in the bud. That way, you can avoid costly repairs later. Along these lines, here’re some leak detectors you or your plumber may employ to identify the exact point of a leak:

  1. Acoustic Leak Detectors

This type of system uses microphones to listen for the sound of running water. The system can triangulate the noise source and pinpoint the leak by placing sensors around your home. But that’s not all. With the help of an acoustic leak detector, your plumber can distinguish between different types of leaks based on pressure and the noise they produce.

  1. Ultrasonic System

Ultrasonic leak detection uses high-frequency sound waves to pinpoint the exact location of a leak. To use this technique, the plumber first applies a special gel to the pipe. The gel amplifies the sound waves, making it easier to find the leak. Then, they use a handheld device to scan the pipe. The device emits sound waves that bounce off the pipe’s walls and then transmit back to the device.

After that, the device interprets the sound waves and displays them on a screen, showing the flow rate, and allowing the plumber to identify the leak’s location. Ultrasonic leak detection is a quick and effective way to find leaks.

Some advanced systems allow homeowners to monitor their water usage and detect leaks in real-time. These systems use a combination of sensors, software, and wireless technology to send alerts to your phone or tablet if they detect a leak. That way, you can shut off the water before the leak does too much damage. Some units even sport ball valves, which automatically shut off the water if they detect a leak.

  1. Thermal Imaging

A thermal imaging system uses infrared technology to detect heat signatures. This can help find leaks because water is often cooler than in the surrounding area. Plumbers can quickly locate areas significantly cooler than the rest by scanning your home with a thermal imager.

A leak detection system can help you swing into action before a small plumbing problem gets out of hand. Similarly, a plumber can use a standalone detector to pinpoint the leak so they can work on repairs quickly. Talk to your go-to pro if you need assistance installing a leak detection system or resolving a plumbing issue in your home.
