History of Notepad++

Notepad++ was invented by Don Ho in September 2003. [JEXT (Java-based text editor)] in his company, but due to poor performance, he started to develop a text editor written in C++ with Scintilla. Since his company rejected the idea, he has developed it in his spare time. Notepad++ is built as a Microsoft Windows application. The author considered but rejected the idea of porting it to Mac OS X and UNIX platforms using wx Widgets.

Notepad++ was originally released on SourceForge on November 25, 2003, as a Windows-only application. It is based on the Scintilla editor component, written in C++, using only Win32 API calls, and only using STL to improve performance and reduce program size.

In January 2010, the U.S. government instructed the U.S. open-source project custodian to deny access to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria in order to comply with U.S. laws. In response to the developer’s belief that it violates the concept of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), in June 2010, Notepad++ moved out of the United States by releasing a version on TuxFamily, France. Until 2015, when Notepad++ completely left Sourceforge, some of Notepad++’s community services (such as forums and bug trackers) remained on Sourceforge.
