Healthy foods to eat this winter

Winters are here. The season to get cozy by the fireplace is upon us. Time for warming up underneath the thick blankets. But with the good also comes the bad.

Winters also bring along with them chills; the one that goes bone deep and causes discomfort. Moreover, in winters, thanks to the low temperatures, catching cold is easier.

Similarly, most places do not get enough sun, so there are also mood problems to contend with.  However, by making the correct dietary choices, it is possible to enjoy winters to the max, as the Best Nutritionist in Lahore will also tell you.

Healthy food options for winters

Fresh produce

Even though the options generally are limited, as cold is harder for the vegetation to withstand, but there are still options like root vegetables that are available for the most part.

Vegetables that are fresh not only taste better, but seasonal vegetables also offer nutrients required per the season.

Drink up soups

Soups are not just convenient to make, but they are a good choice for winters as the hot liquid helps in warming up. Try to make soups that contain both, vegetables, and meat for a wholesome meal. Add some whole grain bread or crackers to get fiber as well.

Load up on vitamin D

Sunlight is an excellent source of vitamin D, however, during winters, there is less sun to catch. Not only does vitamin D help in making bones strong by allowing calcium to be absorbed by the body, but it also plays a pivotal role in the mood as well. Dearth of vitamin D can lead to mood problems, depression, and weak bones.

Hence, it is imperative that you utilize the dietary sources of vitamin D during winters. Some to consider include eggs, red meat, salmon, fortified cereal, etc.

Load up on eggs

Eggs are a full meal; they not only offer nutrition, but they are also very convenient to make. In winters, it is harder to get out of bed and step into the cold kitchen.

Alongside being easy and quick to cook, eggs also can be cooked in a variety of ways; make a frittata, boil them away, stick to the simple scrambled eggs or try an omelets!

Warm milk

Milk is a great source of protein. Milk also contains calcium, which is required to keep your bones strong. Furthermore, milk also contains vitamin B12 and vitamin A, therefore, is a great source of nutrients. Warm or hot milk also helps in keeping you warm in cold winters.

So, try to add warm milk to your diet. Perhaps you can take it at night, or for breakfast

Fish is great

Fish is excellent source of protein. It carries all the goodness, but not as much fat as red meat. Other than being a light form of protein, fish comes in various varieties and can be cooked utilizing different techniques, so does not become monotonous.

Oily fish is even better, as it is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acid, which helps in keeping your brain sharp. Therefore, try to cut back on red meat and instead add fish to the menu.

Nuts and seeds

Nuts are a treat to have. Not only do they taste extremely good, but they are also full of nutrition as well. It is also very convenient to use nuts; you can either eat them as is or add to different foods.

Similarly, seeds are also a very healthy form of snack. In winters, when you are cozy and catching up on the television content that you follow, instead of eating unhealthy crisps and cookies, try the healthier alternative of seeds.

However, it is important to note that many people have nut allergies. If you do not know, and eating nuts causes you to experience allergic reaction that includes skin breaks out, breathing problems, etc., then you should consult your doctor at Fatima Memorial Hospital to confirm for nut allergies.
