Veganism needs no introduction being one of the fastest-growing diet trends in the world. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept, a vegan diet proposes entirely plant-based sustenance. Animal products and by-products are not used by vegans. This abstinence includes meat, milk, and animal-derived products like honey, gelatin, etc.

Vegan products are generally cruelty-free and not tested on animals. Veganism is a lifestyle applied to a wide range of aspects, from vegan skincare to vegan clothing. Australia is at the forefront of the vegan lifestyle globally. The most Google searches for veganism were from Newcastle, Launceston, and Sunshine Coast. Celebrity endorsements for this trend from Australian stars like Liam Hemsworth have propelled this trend forward.

 Veganism is environment-friendly. It advocates sustainable practices and is against exploiting animals for human needs.

Veganism can be adopted in the following aspects

Diet

          Even under veganism, there are different approaches one can follow. Their diets include whole-food vegan, low fat, fruitarian (raw food vegan), etc. The vegan diet is gaining popularity, and three reasons attributed to it are:

  • Ethical reasons:- Vegans do not condone the killing of another living being for one’s sustenance when there are other alternatives.
  • Environmental reasons:- Veganism is an eco-friendly practice. Cattle-farming and dairy farming are prime contributors to the overall carbon footprint. By avoiding these products, vegans support conservation.
  • Health reasons:- Lastly, it is a healthy choice as a vegan diet is rich in iron, vitamins, and fiber that are provided by vegetables.

Studies have shown that a vegan diet reduces the risk of heart diseases. Following such a diet can also reduce the risk of obesity. Many people adopt a vegan lifestyle to aid weight loss. It is preferred by people with diabetes and blood sugar, as these levels remain in control.

A vegan diet is also beneficial in reducing symptoms of arthritis, kidney problems, and cancer. However, there is a risk of a deficit of essential protein and other nutrition in a vegan diet. Such a diet is also not advisable for children and pregnant women.

Skincare

Vegan cosmetics are different from vegetarian cosmetics in that the former uses no dead animal or animal by-products, including milk and honey. The latter uses no dead animals but incorporates animal by-products.

Vegan skincare uses eco-friendly practices like 100% recycled, zero packaging waste, or minimal packaging. The use of resources and waste generated are reduced. Peta and other vegan associations offer labels that are easy to recognize on products for the sake of buyers.

Vegan cosmetics are also the safest bet as they have very few chemicals and almost zero side effects. They are entirely plant-based and contains the goodness of mother nature. If one has sensitive, allergy-prone skin and desires to get a product that suits them, going vegan is the best option.

 Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, lanolin, stearic acid, and collagen present in most skincare products are often animal-derived substances. Although, some of these have plant-based alternatives. A vegan lifestyle means a change in consumer behavior. They become more conscious buyers.

Conclusion

With the rise of sensitivity about the environment, health, and animal rights, veganism does not limit itself to the food sector. The progressive strides in technology and the biochemical industry have led to veganism being adopted even in the non-food sector. Clothes, footwear, cosmetics, and household products have all turned to vegan practices. This trend is a good sign that will prove beneficial to the environment in general.
