Frenchies Have Ancient Origins

Bulldogs and subsequently the English mastiff were both descended from the Molossian. A cousin of the mastiff known as the “Bullenbeiser,” an extinct German bulldog, was bred specifically for the sport of “bull baiting.”

Bull baiting, however, was outlawed in England in 1835, leaving bulldogs idle. As a result, they were later bred to become companion dogs. However, because they were bred as ratter dogs, some bulldogs were crossed with lesser breeds like terriers because they were thought to be too huge.

Around 1850, toy bulldogs—scaled-down versions of the Bullenbeiser crossed with lesser breeds—became very popular in England. They started competing in breed shows a decade later. Toy bulldogs were among the puppies brought by Nottinghamshire lace workers who relocated to Normandy, France, and which the French loved. Bulldogs that English breeders regarded to be too little or to have other flaws, like protruding ears, were also exported.

However, these little bulldogs became well-liked in France and a recognized breed known as the “Bouledogue Francais,” which is French for “ball” and “mastiff” or “molosser.” These toy bulldogs unexpectedly became fashion symbols because Parisian ladies, including writers, fashion designers, and painters, adored them.

The average height of a French bulldog is between 28 and 30 centimeters (11 to 12 inches). Males typically weigh between 9 and 13 kilograms (approximately 20 and 28 pounds) and females between 7 and 11 kilos (16 to 24 pounds).

Their big square skulls and slightly rounded foreheads are topped with protruding bat ears. Like regular bulldogs, Frenchies have broad necks and widely spaced eyes, but their foreheads are a little more rounded. Their wrinkled, short, smooth coat, which comes in a variety of colors including brindle, fawn, cream, white with brindle patches, and black, is most noticeable around the head and shoulders.
