Common Reasons For IRS Form 2290 Rejection

It is common for your form 2290 to get rejected due to several reasons. However, you need not worry as you can make the correction and resubmit it to the IRS.

Below, we have broken down the common reasons for IRS Form 2290 rejections:

  • Business name & EIN Mismatch: Your business name and Employee Identification Number (EIN) has to match with the IRS records. Each EIN is unique to a business, so make sure you enter the right EIN.

In case of incorrect business details or EIN, the IRS will send you an email stating the reason for rejection. You can correct it and refile your form 2290.

  • Use of new EIN: Not everyone is aware that when you receive a new EIN, it generally takes about 2 to 5 weeks to get registered in the IRS system. Not knowing this, many applicants use their new EIN immediately after receiving it, which causes IRS rejection.

If your form gets rejected due to this, make sure you wait at least 2 weeks before you file again.

  • Incorrect bank details: When you e-file 2290, the HVUT amount is generally paid via any online mode. To make the payment, you must fill in the correct bank account details. If you unintentionally submit the wrong bank details, the IRS will reject your form.

In such cases, you can resubmit it by filling in the correct details.

  • Duplicate filing: Once you file the IRS form 2290 for the same vehicle in the same year, you cannot file again. If you do, it will show an error depicting ‘duplicate filing exists’. So, make sure you file it once every year with all the correct relevant information.
  • Missing details: While manually filing the form, there are high chances that you miss out on filling in some details, among which the most common is signature. If you leave any section or do not sign at the required places, the IRS will consider your form invalid and hence will get rejected.
  • Mileage error: Inconsistency in mileage information will lead to the rejection of your IRS form 2290. To avoid this, make sure the mileage exceeded month is equal to or more than the ‘first used month’.
  • Incorrect payment date: Make sure to write the correct payment date. Your payment should not fall on public holidays or a weekend. It is important to note that the payment date should not exceed your e-filing date by more than 5 days.

If such a mistake persists, there are high chances that your IRS form 2290 may get rejected.

In Conclusion

If any of the above situations exists, you can easily resubmit your form 2290. However, it is always best to review your details before submitting them to avoid these errors.

Also, several e-file service providers offer 24×7 customer support and will assist you with every query of yours to avoid any errors while e-filing.
