Foods That Are Safe for Your Dog

If you’re a dog owner who considers your pooch to be part of the family, you probably share everything with him. You likely let him sleep in your bed, go along on car rides, lounge on the couch and snack on whatever you’re eating. However, even when Fido is begging for food, you need to be cautious about what you’re letting him eat. Much of what is safe for human consumption can be dangerous or even deadly for dogs. To make matters worse, you’ve probably heard conflicting stories as to what foods are acceptable. It’s time to get the facts straight. Here are several foods you can safely share with your dog.

Bread

While not the healthiest option for your dog, you can feed him a few bites of plain bread. Don’t add spices or butter. This should only be in moderation as it doesn’t provide any health benefits. In fact, too much of it can cause weight gain. However, just as humans enjoy indulging occasionally, so do dogs. Purchase fresh bread or make your own to avoid preservatives. This is acceptable as an occasional snack, but be sure not to overdo it.

CBD Oil

It has become common knowledge that CBD oil helps humans with a multitude of ailments. The good news is that you can use CBD oil for dogs also. It has several benefits including anti-inflammatory properties and anti-anxiety effects. While there are treats that contain CBD oil, the best way to administer it to your dog is by using an oil or tincture, so you can control how many drops your dog gets. This will allow you to find the amount that works best.

Eggs

You can feed your dog eggs if they are fully cooked. Eggs are a great protein source. Don’t give your pooch an undercooked or raw egg because it can cause a biotin deficiency.

Fish

Fish is similar to eggs as it needs to be cooked. Sardines and salmon are the most beneficial because they contain healthy fats, amino acids, vitamins and protein. You should pick out small bones except for in sardines, as those bones are soft and easy to digest, and they contain much needed calcium. Your dog will be pleased to know that he can have fish twice every week.

Chicken

Fully cooked chicken is safe for your dog’s consumption, as many dog foods contain chicken as the main ingredient. All bones should be removed to avoid choking hazards or perforating the digestive tract or organs.

Honey

You may not have considered feeding your dog honey, but it actually has many health perks. Honey has vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K along with antioxidants, calcium and potassium. Feeding your dog small amounts can also help him to build up his immunity to allergies.

Popcorn

If you and your dog are watching a movie together, you may be tempted to share your popcorn, especially if he is giving you those puppy eyes. Luckily, you can share as long as it has been fully air-popped and has no butter and or salt added to it. Allowing your dog to eat popcorn in moderation is helpful because it includes riboflavin and thiamine, which are crucial for avoiding digestive and eye problems.

Rice

It’s safe to feed your dog cooked brown or white rice. Rice can ease an upset stomach, and it’s easy to digest. It can be added to other foods such as fish or chicken to make a healthier and tastier meal for your pooch.

By no means is this an exhaustive list, but it gives you an idea about some foods your dog will be more than happy to eat with you. If you’re not sure whether your dog can safely eat something, research it before giving it to him. Making a wrong decision can result in sickness or even death. Being food safety conscious will help your dog to live a long, healthy life.
