The Strive for Self-Awareness
Many people assume the most important characteristic of a leader is to be “bossy.” However, David El Dib believes it is the quality of self-awareness. A leader must consistently be aware of their actions and the message they send to their audience.
Team members, employees, and peers often mimic the actions of leaders, so they must be aware of their own verbal and nonverbal cues. This can be especially important during times of extreme stress.
They Prioritize Ethics
An excellent leader always considers the consequences of their actions and decisions. They base decisions on what is ethical and best for the community, never solely for themselves.
A leader who behaves ethically does not abuse their authority and is always transparent. They recognize emotions and take responsibility for mistakes they make. David El Dib expressed the importance of having concern for the entire community, organization, and in the case of business, customers.
Transparent Communication
An excellent leader can communicate clearly through all mediums, including in-person, print, telephone, or online. An excellent communicator on social media may falter when speaking to a group in-person. Successful leaders must understand their communicative strengths and weaknesses and work to improve areas in need.
A successful leader must communicate effectively, listen actively, encourage enthusiasm, and become well-versed in multiple communication styles.
They Encourage Innovation
David El Dib explained that a successful leader is always looking forward. They think about where their team, organization, and industry are going rather than where they’ve been.
An excellent leader attempts to predict problems and tackle them before they arise. They also encourage team members to think critically, innovate, and feel confident to take action.
They’re Consistent
A successful leader is someone their team can rely on. They act and communicate in a consistent way that’s often predictable. Such predictability establishes trust among team members and ensures they’re comfortable asking for help or proposing creative ideas.
