The quality of engine oil affects not only the longevity of the engine but also how much fuel a vehicle actually consumes. Many tests show that using oils with friction-reducing additives can lower fuel consumption by up to around 2% compared to products without such components. In everyday driving, the difference may be difficult to notice, but over the course of a year, it can translate into tangible savings – especially for vehicles covering high mileages.

Oil lubricates moving components, reducing friction between them. It forms a thin protective layer that separates metal from metal and prevents excessive wear. In addition, it removes heat from the areas most prone to overheating, protects surfaces from corrosion, and keeps the inside of the engine clean by holding tiny contaminants in suspension. This way, the lubrication system acts as a safety filter – without it, deposits could settle on working parts, causing power loss and increased fuel consumption.
Without proper lubrication, the power unit loses efficiency and burns more fuel, as it has to overcome greater resistance. Importantly, this process happens gradually – the driver often doesn’t notice the difference right away, but over time, the increased resistance results in a clear rise in fuel usage.
When oil has the right viscosity and stability, the engine expends less energy to overcome internal resistance. A thin yet durable lubricating film allows pistons, bearings, and shafts to move smoothly without unnecessary losses. On the other hand, poorly chosen oil may be too thick during cold starts or too thin at high operating temperatures. In the first case, this increases friction and temporary fuel consumption; in the second, it reduces lubrication effectiveness.
It can be compared to riding a bicycle with a well-lubricated chain – pedaling is easier, and less effort is needed. The same principle applies in an engine: less resistance means less fuel needed to maintain the same power output. For company fleets or vehicles traveling thousands of kilometers each month, the savings from choosing the right oil are even more significant.
An oil that maintains viscosity across a wide temperature range protects the engine both during cold starts and under intense driving in hot weather. This is particularly important because “cold” driving often generates the highest momentary fuel consumption. Viscosity also affects how quickly oil reaches all lubrication points after the engine starts – the faster this happens, the lower the fuel consumption and the better the protection of mechanical components.
Equally important is the source of the oil. Many drivers have learned from experience that it’s best to choose products exclusively from trusted suppliers. Only then can you be certain the oil meets manufacturer standards, contains the right additives, and hasn’t been stored in conditions that could compromise its quality. A reputable source also greatly reduces the risk of counterfeit products – which matters for both fuel efficiency and engine durability.
