DIY AC Maintenance: Simple Tasks You Can Do Yourself to Keep Your AC Running Smoothly

Nowadays, the air conditioner is more like a family member. From cooling our homes to comforting our bodies, air conditioners are the ultimate source of relaxation. An air conditioner removes dust, pollen, and other particles and creates a fresh and pleasant atmosphere in our rooms. It spreads the cool breeze on every edge of the room to maintain comfort.

An AC takes care of our simple yet crucial need for comfort. The way we keep our body clean for healthy living though, likewise, air conditioners also need cleaning. Cleaning and maintaining the air conditioner helps improve its performance and lifespan. For enhanced functioning of an AC, we must follow a regular maintenance regime for the same at home. 

Before learning its maintenance requirements, let’s understand:

The core units of an AC:

  • Condenser Unit: The condenser unit is the outdoor part of the AC that releases heat outside.
  • Compressor: It is inside the condenser unit. Compressors compress the refrigerant vapor.
  • Condensing Coil: It releases the heat absorbed by the evaporator coil.
  • Fan and Belts: The fan circulates the air in the room.
  • Filters: Air filters capture the dust, smoke, pollen, and other particles from the home and bring in the fresh outdoor air inside.
  • Thermostat: Thermostat operates the compressor and fan of the AC.

Steps for AC maintenance:

  1. Cleaning the vents: 

Cleaning the vents before starting the AC for the first time is required. Most of the time, dust and debris accumulate on the vents. First, clean this dust with a vacuum hose and then wipe the vent faceplates with a washcloth.

You should ensure not to use any chemicals while cleaning, as they can damage the minor parts of the AC if the enter it.

  1. Clean the filters:

Remove the filter from the AC for cleaning. Wash the filters with warm water and some soap. Then rinse them and let them dry. Now, put the clean filters in the AC. While putting the filters in, you can gently wipe down the condenser coil. 

Filters are the main components of the AC, so ensure you clean them regularly. 

If any replacement is required, you can call a servicing professional and get it done. This process will enhance the performance of the AC.

  1. Check the fans and belts:

The fans and belts are critical components of the AC. Look for broken or frayed parts of the fans and belts to avoid last-minute servicing runs. A broken fan will not push air or condense the air. Hence, replace the fan if necessary.

  1. Monitor and adjust thermostat settings:

Ensure a proper adjustment of the thermostat settings for efficient and effective use. Ensure that the unit properly starts and stops and adjusts the temperature according to the house temperature.

  1. Inspect the other components:

You should inspect and clean the evaporator, condenser coil, and the outdoor unit of the AC regularly as well.

Following this maintenance checklist will enhance the AC performance.
