Christopher Slattery of Sarasota, FL. has a successful career as a software engineer or developer. It was his love of gaming apps at a very young age that put him on an exciting journey that has taken him down several professional paths. From fixing software bugs in gamification code to analyzing algorithms for enterprise-wide software roll-outs, he spends much of his on-the-job time planning and testing corporate-wide software deployments today.

Being a software engineer has many benefits, according to Chris Slattery. And, for young people looking for a high-paying, rewarding career, there are many versions of software engineer jobs that will fit almost any personality or temperament. Those who may be a little more introverted can find software engineering jobs that allow them to work from home and spend much of their time deep in thought solving complex software problems.

For the extrovert, working in a corporate IT setting and managing enterprise-wide systems puts you in a fast-paced environment side-by-side with upper management to make IT decisions that can truly affect a company’s bottom line. Here are more benefits that Chris Slattery discovered as a software engineer.

Table of Contents

  • Excellent paying salaries
  • A High Demand Job
  • Can Work Remotely

Excellent paying salaries

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average salary of a software engineer is approximately $110,000 per year, or about $52 per hour. For a good comparison, similar jobs at this pay rate include construction project managers, dentists, and CFOs of SMBs.

But, depending on the company and the specific job description, software developers can expect to make well over this annual pay rate, especially once they have marketable experience.

A High Demand Job

Also, according to the BLS, there will be a 25% increase in software engineering jobs by the year 2031, which indicates faster-than-average growth. Almost every industry needs a software engineer at some point, even if it’s just when they download e-commerce software to run an online business (like Shopify) or buy a business financial accounting platform app (like Quicken). All of these types of business software began as and continue to operate due to constant input from a software engineer.

With our ever-increasingly digital and online world, you can expect software development to be the catalyst that takes us into the Fifth Industrial Revolution, including machine learning, IoT, and artificial intelligence.

Can Work Remotely

A final statistic that Christopher Slattery of Sarasota likes to refer to is the fact that nearly 90% of software engineers either work from home (full-time), or they have a hybrid schedule where they spend some time in the office and some time working from home. While working from home may not suit everyone, it is still nice to have that option.

Software development is aptly suited for remote work since we can patch into to the office through their extranet excess portal. Working from home offers a better work/life balance, while also eliminating the stress of commuting to work. Just make sure you set up a dedicated space within the home that is quiet and well-lit to simulate the office environment as much as possible.
