Causes and Treatments for Neck Pain

Harvard Health estimates that approximately 80% of people suffer from neck pain at some point. This common affliction is frustrating, the pain distracting people from daily activities. Why do so many people develop this condition? How might you alleviate it? Not everyone may find permanent relief, but there could be solutions to the problem for many patients. First, sufferers should speak with a doctor about the source of discomfort. With that answer, then turn to appropriate treatments.

What Causes This Chronic Pain?

The neck is used frequently. The body part is used to support the head, capable of holding up the skull. The muscles that are likely causing pain run from the skull’s base to the upper back. At some point, either through exercise, posture or an accident, this area was pulled or strained; thus, you feel pain.

Your everyday actions are likely to be the cause. Sitting in front of a computer or at a desk requires you to hold your head in one position for a while. This might be asking too much of the neck. In addition, you could be quickly turning it to look at someone or something. This jilted movement is harsh. Finally, poor sleep habits and lack of stretching could be leading to aches as well.

What Can You Do About It?

Improve your posture. At work and home, invest in seating with swivel casters. These wheels allow for the entire body to turn rather than just the neck. This swift in movement alleviates some of the stress placed on the neck muscles. Also, look for chairs with ergonomic features. The cushions lend support for the back and neck. You probably can’t quit your job, but you might make the environment easier for your muscles.

Purchase pillows with enough padding so that the neck is cradled well while you sleep. When your eyes close, this time is a chance for the mind and body to heal. However, if the pillow isn’t allowing the neck to sit at ease, it’s only furthering the problem. The National Sleep Foundation has a list of possible pillows to improve your slumber.

Make an appointment with medical professionals to discuss acupuncture, chiropractic treatments or medicines. If discs are out of alignment, physicians may take steps to realign through adjustment or surgery.

There are ways to get past the discomfort. Speak with specialists about how you feel. Then, with support, develop a plan to feel better.
