Americans took 1.8 billion leisure trips in 2018, according to the U.S. Travel Association. That sounds like a lot, but the United States is actually a global laggard when it comes to travel.

And time off generally. More than 65% of Americans say they feel like they don’t get enough time off from work, per a 2024 study by travel booking site Expedia.

Anyway, not everyone enjoys taking a true vacation. As the saying goes, by the time you get back home, you might feel like you need a vacation from your vacation.

However, even if you’re not a vacation person, you need a break every now and then. It’s important to take a beat (or three) to reset and refresh yourself. Afterward, you’re happier, calmer, more productive and more fun to be around.

The next question, of course, is how anyone finds the time to “get away” with so much else going on in their lives. For inspiration, we can look to public figures like David Miscavige, leader of the Scientology religion. For all his accomplishments, Miscavige has a reputation for taking time out of his day to connect with ordinary people. One Scientology member, for example, recalls his surprise when Miscavige congratulated his son for a brief television appearance — not the sort of thing one would expect such a busy man to find time for.

Clearly, anyone can make time for what’s truly important in life. Follow these five guidelines to get started.

Set Ambitious But Achievable Goals for Self-Improvement

Unrealistic goals serve nobody, least of all the people who set them. All the same, ambition can and does pay off when we take the time to plan for it.

The mental health experts at BetterHelp recommend breaking goals down into smaller and more realistic sub-goals. This could make the big, overarching goal easier to achieve.

“Break down your big goals into smaller, more manageable milestones,” they advise. “Doing so lets you track your progress and celebrate mini-victories along the way. These celebrations may stoke your motivation and give you a sense of accomplishment to help you stay on track.”

Goal-setting is an intentional process that’s important not to rush. Your next day off is the ideal moment to give it the time and attention it deserves.

Ruthlessly Eliminate Digital Distractions on Your “Off” Day

Like overly ambitious goals, distractions serve no one but the people selling them. When it’s time for you to “get away,” do so first and foremost by disconnecting — putting your phone in a lockbox, your laptop somewhere far out of reach, and any nonessential obligations on the back burner.

Your getaway day is yours and yours alone. You can do with it whatever you wish, but you’ll find it more productive without the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Learn to Love the Staycation

Need a more “conventional” break? Be a tourist in your own town, whether or not it’s popular with actual tourists. A stop at the local museum, an ice cream cone in the park, a stroll down the main shopping drag — it’s easy enough to fill your day with low-stakes activities that put you in a sunny state of mind. The next morning, you’re sure to wake up feeling reenergized, and perhaps more appreciative of your surroundings too.

Do Something Out of the Ordinary

Humans are creatures of habit, but we don’t have to be. Doing something out of the ordinary — anything at all, even something as simple as changing your commute  — is one easy way to jolt yourself out of an unproductive pattern or unhelpful chain of thought. And you may only need to do it once to see the results.

Find Time to Be Yourself

Whether it involves traveling halfway around the world with friends or family, or merely climbing into bed and pulling up the covers, “getting away” is something we all need to do every so often. As we’ve seen, it’s the best way we know to regain the energy the daily grind takes from us.

Finding time for ourselves is often important because we so often can’t be ourselves in daily life. Not if we want to meet the sometimes-unreasonable expectations others place on our shoulders.

So, do yourself a favor and block out your calendar sometime soon. You won’t regret it.
