Build a Drone: A Quick Guide

Have you always wanted to learn to fly a drone? If so, join the club!

After all, piloting a drone is super fun yet incredibly challenging. It’s no wonder they’ve become increasingly popular in recent years.

Believe it or not, it’s possible to purchase the parts to build a drone of your very own. The key is to understand a few important tips for building a drone at home, safely and accurately.

This article takes a look at everything you’ll need to know for how to build a drone, including the components list. Keep reading to get the inside scoop.

Type of Drones

Let’s start by discussing the types of drones you could build. This is important because the parts you purchase will need to match the size you plan to build.

There are several different classes. They include 2″ class build, 3-4″ micro class build, 5″ mini class build, 6″ mini class build, and 7+” class build.

The Components You’ll need

Next, you’ll need to understand the components list necessary to complete construction on a drone.

The twelve primary components include the frame, motors, ESCs, flight controller, PDB, FPV camera, VTX, video antenna, propellers, battery, transmitter, and goggles that enable you to observe the flight from the drone’s perspective.

Tools

You’re also going to need a few tools. These basic tools include a set of hex keys or drivers, an 8mm nut spinner or ratchet, a soldering iron, and wire cutters.

How to a Assemble Your Drone

The step in the building process is assembling the frame. This step is pretty simple and straightforward.

Carbon fiber tube is the perfect frame material.

Next, mount the PDB using nylon or rubber standoffs. Once this is done, go ahead and mount the motors, paying close attention to the direction they will spin.

After mounting the motors on the frame, mount the ESCs on the arms, protecting them with heatshrink. Now proceed with connecting the ESCs to the motors and the ESCs to the PDB. At this point, you’ll be ready to test the motors with a power source.

Now attach the FPV system and test it. Once this step is complete, mount the receiver.

And once all the above steps are complete, begin wiring the flight controller and configure the software.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully built a quadcopter drone!

Taking Your Drone of a Test Flight

The first test flight can be nerve-wracking. The key is to understand the basics of using the controller, getting oriented with how to manipulate the drone’s flight path, and then to start with small flights in your backyard.

Then make sure to practice in an area away from power lines, homes, or trees. It’s also a good idea to stay clear of busy roads.
