Benefits of Electric Scooters to Our Environment

Why choose electric scooters? Electric scooters are efficient, accessible, affordable, assist recovery for the economy and are sustainable. All of these benefits point to the truth that it is good for us.

1. Efficient

Since e-scooters are small, foldable, and lightweight, it is efficient in space-saving. It is even foldable. Come to think about it, it massively reduces congestion on the road and will ease traffic and make it easier to get around the city. This has been a big problem for many cities around the world, and who knew an electric scooters was the answer to saving the environment!

2. Accessible

In the July 2019 Global Rider Survey, in Washington  D.C., 44% of riders said that electric scooters enabled them to access their current job and other career opportunities. Electric scooters are a fast mode of transportation, as compared to walking. Just a fact, it is also safer to be in an electric scooter at night than to walk in the dark. Not only are electric scooters good for the environment but to its people as well.

3. Affordable

Electric scooters provide a low-cost transportation alternative, ranging from Au $299 – $3,000 whereas an average car price in Australia is $40,729, according to Canstar Blue Australia which is a research website providing consumers with important information for their purchasing decisions. 

In fact, it is true that not everybody can afford a car, and not everybody wants a car, but the bigger truth is we don’t really want everyone using a car due to its long-term, negative effect that affects us directly.

Moving forward, if we talk about maintenance, since e-scooters contain fewer parts, they are also generally low-maintenance and cheaper. Less parts mean less garbage for the environment, but if it’s recyclable, then it means zero waste.

If we talk about commuting, it is also much more expensive as compared to owning a private electric scooter. A study found that riding public transportation costs around $1,607.00 in a year, while riding private electric scooters costs around $1,217.60 in a year. The less people commute, the less traffic there will be especially during rush hour and the less gas emissions. Owning your own electric scooter is one way to save the environment. (Note that these figures refer to commuters travelling within the CBD so these figures can vary in other states or territories in Australia.)

4. Assist Recovery for the Economy

In the July 2019 Global Rider Survey, it was found that 29.3% of tourists who use electric scooters are likely to end their trips at a restaurant or entertainment shop and tend to visit more local shops and attractions. 

Electric scooters have proven to contribute to boosting and assisting in recovery of the economy even in the pandemic. It gives the private sectors, the workers and businesses the chance to get back on their feet and recover what was lost during the lockdown. If it is good for the economy, it is good for the people and if the people are truly grateful, all the more they in turn take good care of their environment where their economy thrives.

5. Sustainable

An electric scooter is extremely sustainable and it positively impacts the environment greatly, including zero emissions and reduced carbon emissions in the air for its overall lifecycle. 

Electric scooters also reduce land waste, how? The parts of an electric scooter are ideally made from recyclable or sustainable materials, such as metal screws and frames. This is how electric scooters help reduce land and water waste.

Did you know electric scooters use electric motors which makes gears unnecessary, and may support energy recovery by regenerative braking? This is an energy recovery mechanism that slows down the electric scooter by converting its kinetic energy into a form that can be either used immediately or stored until needed. This can significantly extend the life of the braking system as the mechanical parts will not wear out very quickly. Electric scooters are definitely sustainable and the way to go.

Madison Bland, a PhD candidate at Griffith University’s Cities Research Institute, says that the benefits of electric scooters are multifaceted. He continues, “As soon as electricity grids transition, electric scooters will be carbon neutral. We can look to them as part of a breadth of sustainable transport modes, one important factor of many. They’re perfect for those short, inner metropolitan trips. And with rising fuel prices, electric scooters provide a cost-effective device. But there’s also the fun factor, which is why they’re strongly outcompeting a lot of other modes of transport.”

Just to add, electric scooters are also used by a number of law enforcement agencies like security patrolling. It just shows that if the government promotes electric scooters, so should the citizens.
