Be Healthy AND Green at the Office

Let’s face it — we often work too much without even stopping to consider the long-term consequences of that practice. Burnouts have become a common occurrence, and depression and anxiety are the issues of our era.

Does every day have to be so stressful?

Certainly not. Even small steps everyone can undertake can help us lead a healthier and happier lifestyle even though a job may still be stressful.

For starters, bad habits that can be eliminated fast should be a priority. Let’s take a look at some practical ideas.

Walk, Wall and Walk Some More

Sitting for too long is practiced by almost every working person. The first sign that something is amiss is usually back pain, but there are also other signs.

The easiest thing to do in this situation is to take short breaks to stretch your muscles or do a light workout, when time allows.

Also, take the stairs, walk or ride a bicycle to work to get your legs moving.

If you absolutely have to drive, consider going electric when you buy your next car, and take advantage of the EV federal incentives.

Seriously Consider Your Office Space

When it comes to making your office space greener and more pleasant, there are really many simple hacks. Start with opening windows and letting more natural light in. It may also be a good idea to consider obtaining a standing desk so you can prevent leg cramps in the long run.

Next on, consider painting the walls of your office in light colors and bring a plant or two (or more, space-permitting). Adding a touch of personality will also make you feel happier. For example, you can bring a photo of your family or pets, or add a painting you especially like.

Finally, if you’re used to keeping snacks on the desk, swap them for a healthier alternative — fruit! A bowl of fruit will make your desk merrier on top of offering a healthy snack whenever you need it (or don’t need it, for that matter). Over time, you’ll get used to this new habit, and your stomach will be much happier for it.

Aside from snacks, don’t eat lunch at your desk. Take a regular lunch break and make sure you enjoy it! A balanced diet includes fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains and lean meat — unless you’re vegetarian. Skip on food rich in salt and sugar. Opt for fruit when you have a craving for sugar.

Set Both Green and Healthy Goals

Many companies have sustainability teams, so why not set healthy goals yourself? Use the company gym and all other perks that are available.

In addition, make sure to set OKRs and achieve small victories on your way to a healthier and happier lifestyle.

What the goals may be differ from person to person, but some general items include working out, walking more (and sitting less, thereby), eating healthier meals and, especially, snacks, and socializing with people you like.

As for the rest, use your imagination. Anything that makes you happy is a valid goal!

Learn More Online

There are, in fact, so many other things to do to stay healthy and be eco-friendly. Consider eLearning options to learn more about what you can do to be happier and make the planet a better place for everyone.

Master the Art of Communication

Stress can easily take root when you’re working in an unpleasant office. For many people, poor communication is the main stressor. It goes without saying that people are different and that not everyone can be friends with everyone, but that doesn’t mean that healthy professional communication cannot be attained.

In addition, if your company practices hybrid work models, make sure to learn the ropes of online communication, which can be by far more relaxed than in-person communication, especially for introverts.

Make Each Break Count

On the matter of breaks, don’t skip them! That’s the first rule. The second is — make every break count. Simply pausing your work and not doing anything meaningful won’t help you relax. Instead, take your time to enjoy the break and make the most of it.

The easiest way to do this is to make a daily schedule that includes all breaks and stick to it. You can adjust your plans depending on the circumstances, too.

For example, when the weather is nice, take your laptop for a walk and resume working from your favorite café or enjoy some relaxing time in a park. This will help you break the routine and feel freer.

Overall, take your time to enjoy all the little activities you perform every day, and change your routine a bit for some added fun. Try something new every day and fulfill milestones little by little. Finally, go back to your pleasant office once that break is over. It’s not that difficult, right?
