Adrian Pereira Brings Serial Entrepreneurship to Life

Adrian Pereira is a serial entrepreneur based in Victoria B.C. Thus far, Adrian has channeled his creative mind, analytical mindset, and entrepreneurial spirit into a number of businesses.

Adrian’s introduction to creative thinking began at home, as his two hardworking parents encouraged him to always think outside the box. His college years were spent at the University of Victoria, where he majored in computer science. While pursuing his degree, Adrian worked at Motorola, UVic, and the Department of National Defense.

While at the University of Victoria, Adrian Pereira launched HockeyDraft.ca, one of his very first businesses. This website efficiently manages hockey pools, automating otherwise labor-intensive pool calculations. Nearly 20 years later, Adrian still oversees the highly successful site. In addition, his love for both sports and spreadsheets led him to start eDraft.com, which generates fantasy sports analytical data for fans.

A couple of years ago, Adrian Pereira started an entirely different kind of business venture. Partnering with his wife Kelly, he launched The Eco Pea Company to find a solution to his infant daughter’s health challenge. The problem was simple: she had an adverse reaction (or diaper rash) to numerous conventional diaper brands.

Adrian and Kelly tried to resolve the problem with medically prescribed ointments, dietary restrictions, and visits to a naturopath. Interestingly, they noticed the severity of their daughter’s diaper rash got better or worse in correlation to the diaper brand.

After testing different materials, they found high-quality natural materials produced no rash at all. However, Adrian believed an even better solution was possible. As concerned parents, Adrian and Kelly Pereira decided to raise the bar on diaper design.

The couple wanted to create a product that would be healthy for both their daughter and the planet. The diapers had to be safe, soft and extremely absorbent while also being sustainably produced. The Pereira’s solution: diapers made from sustainably harvested bamboo that is steam processed without any chemicals.

To date, Adrian and Kelly Pereira have received rave reviews on their Eco Pea diapers and maintain four North American warehouses to serve the growing demand. The Pereira’s have also cultivated a very successful direct-to-consumer business model.

Adrian enthusiastically touts the benefits of engaging directly with their current and potential customers. By creating a community of like-minded fans, they have a ready audience for their marketing efforts.

He does acknowledge that Eco Pea diapers are more expensive than many competing brands’ offerings due to the materials they use. However, he and Kelly didn’t want to compromise on quality. They felt that customers would be willing to make the extra investment for their child’s health and the environment.

To take each of his businesses from idea to reality, Adrian Pereira has developed a sequence that takes most of the guesswork out of the process. He analyzes the concept, learns the logistics of bringing that idea to fruition, and prioritizes all the tasks involved.

Then, he takes all that information into account before getting completely immersed in the business. Not surprisingly, Adrian identifies spreadsheets and data analysis as critical elements needed to make logical decisions.

Speaking from a serial entrepreneur’s perspective, Adrian Pereira emphasizes the value of learning from existing brands. He acknowledges that each brand may be the market leader in some areas while falling short in others. Adrian recommends that a business owner adopt brand strategies that work while adding signature elements unique to their own business.

Adrian Pereira recommends the multifaceted Shopify platform. In addition to containing services that help launch a business, Shopify offers brand-building education that can help companies grow and expand.

Although his enthusiasm for starting new businesses has served him well, Adrian admits that he sometimes gets involved in too many things at once. When that happens, it’s difficult to devote the time and energy required to make each venture successful.

Finally, Adrian Pereira reflects on several pieces of advice that he’d gladly offer to fledgling entrepreneurs. First, getting involved in a passion-driven business puts a different set of wheels in motion. Besides being motivated to put more effort into the business, the entrepreneur is likely to achieve a greater personal return.

He also stresses the importance of exploring new business ideas, even if the entrepreneur isn’t an expert in the field. With easily accessed information on countless subjects, and knowledgeable people to provide expertise when needed, he feels that virtually nothing is off limits.

Kelly and Adrian Pereira love encouraging their children to explore their intellectual curiosity and to dive deep into projects that interest them. At the dinner table, their children often launch a steady stream of concepts and invention ideas at their parents – a sign that another generation of creators may be on the way.
