What Are the Entry Permits Available to Turkey?

- Visa-Free Entry
This option is available for the citizens of certain countries. No visa is required to enter Turkey. Citizens of countries eligible for visa-free entry can visit Turkey with their national IDs or expired passports.

You cannot stay in the country for more than 3 months within a 180-day validity period. Note that only tourism and business meetings are allowed under the visa exemption. You can’t stay or work in the country under visa exemption.
- e-Visa
E-visa is a paperless form of entry authorisation that you can apply for online. You need to visit a reputable e-visa portal to apply for it. An application can be made at any time and from anywhere. Note that the electronic visa is only granted if you are going to travel for tourism or business. Purposes like study and work are not covered by the e-visa.
A passport with 6 months’ validity is needed when applying for visas. The authorised span of stay is 90 days within a 180-day validity period. The e-visa will be delivered to you via your email once it is approved and ready. You can get an e-visa for Turkey if you are from any of these nations.

- Sticker Visa
You can also get a sticker visa. This is the traditional form of a physical paper visa. A sticker visa will be the right choice if you’re not from a country eligible for the electronic version. You can also apply for a sticker visa if your purpose of travel is going to be something other than business or tourism. For example, sticker visas can cover purposes like work or study.
The paper visa will also have 180-day validity with a maximum of 90 days of stay allowed within the validity period. You need to visit the Turkish consulate in your home country to apply for a sticker visa.
You need to submit a valid passport along with proof of hotel bookings and a return flight. You may also need to submit proof of funds to enable your purpose of visit. You can collect your paper visa from the consulate. You can also receive it via post if you’re also submitting the application via post with a prepaid return envelope.
- Work, Study & Long-Term Visas
You will need long-term visas to stay for longer than 90 days in Turkey. It will let you stay for specific purposes like study, work, or family reunification. You need to apply for long-term visas at the Turkish consulate.
Additional documents, like a letter of invitation from the employer or sponsorship evidence, must be submitted for work visas. Proof of enrolment in a Turkish institution must be submitted additionally if you want a student visa. Family unification is also a valid purpose if you can prove that your family members are living in Turkey.
Note that you also need to register yourself at the police station near you once you arrive in Turkey. This is mandatory for work, study, and residence permit holders, regardless of visa validity. This will also be necessary for getting resilience permits. You will have one month to register.
- Residence Permit
You need a residence permit if you are intending to be in Turkey for longer than the period allowed by your visa. The residence permit is granted to students and employees. It is also granted for family unification and other long-term stays.
- Short-Term Residence Permit
A short-term residence permit is granted in cases like scientific study, business setup, on-the-job training, and education programs. You will also get it if you own an immovable property in another country. The validity of short-term residence permits depends on how long it takes you to fulfil your purpose. Expect a maximum of 5 years allowed in the country.
- Family, Student & Humanitarian Residence Permits
Family residence permits will be granted if you are a foreign spouse or a dependent foreign child. Such permits allow a maximum stay of 3 years, but always less than the duration permitted to your sponsor. You can apply for student residence permits if you want to pursue primary or secondary education but don’t have a family residence permit. The duration allowed is less than that of your course.
You can also get humanitarian residence permits if you are a victim of human trafficking. Humanitarian residence permits are also granted in cases where it is in the best interest of children. Such permits do not come with a specific duration of stay. Governorates will grant and renew the permits as deemed appropriate.
- Long-Term Residence Permit
A long-term residence permit is granted in cases like subsidiary protection and refuge. The permit is issued indefinitely. Some conditions to get the permit include living in Turkey for a minimum of 8 years, not having received social assistance in the last 3 years, and not having sufficient stable income to support oneself and family.
