With the busy lives we all lead these days, it can be hard to carve out time for yourself, especially for women. However, with all the daily stressors, crazy schedules, and PTA meetings, it takes to be a functioning woman and mother in society today, it is vital for women to take a break from caring for others and spend time taking care of themselves. If you’re unsure where to start on your self-care journey, here are a few tips:

Table of Contents

  • 1. Get Enough Sleep Every Night
  • 2. Take Care of Your Health
  • 3. Exercise Daily as Part of Your Care Routine
  • 4. Eat a Balanced Diet
  • 5. Be Okay With Saying ‘No’ to Others
  • 6. Declutter and Get Organized

1. Get Enough Sleep Every Night

Sleep is so vital for every faction of our lives. Getting enough sleep at night can help boost your mood, your health, and ultimately extend your life. If you’re having a hard time keeping a regular sleep routine, instead of immediately reaching for the sleeping pills, try to get into a good before bed time routine. This might look different for everyone. Some people like to read, or listen to soothing music. The most important thing (and for the addicted, this can be difficult) is to stop looking at any screens before bed.

2. Take Care of Your Health

This should go without saying, but your body needs you to take care of it sometimes. As women, we need special maintenance that our male counterparts do not. Make sure you are keeping up with your gynecology care. A clinic like South Jersey gynecology will ensure your reproductive health and sexual health is healthy by administering a pap smear and STI test.

3. Exercise Daily as Part of Your Care Routine

We all already know that exercise is a good thing. However, putting that thought into practice can sometimes be a little difficult. If you’re not exactly a gym shark, that is okay. There are plenty of ways to be active. Take a walk with a friend. Go for a bike ride through your local park. Join an intramural sports team. There are lots of ways to get moving and still have fun!

4. Eat a Balanced Diet

There is a lot of value in the saying “you are what you eat”. If you’re eating nothing but fast food and hot cheetos all day, you’re bound to feel not-so-good by the end of the day. That also doesn’t mean that you need to be limiting yourself to tofu and tap water. Sweets and treats can have their place in your diet, as long as you’re eating in moderation. The key to finding a good diet is balance. Resist the temptation to try fad diets that promise instant results or life changing transformations. More often than not, these diets are both unsustainable and unhealthy. Make small tweaks to your already existing routine to integrate healthy food options.

5. Be Okay With Saying ‘No’ to Others

Over committing to plans helps no one and will probably just stress you out. If you find yourself constantly running from one engagement to the next, it is okay to decline an invitation or two every now and then. We all need some time to recharge. Instead of meeting friends for another happy hour, take some time to just hang out with yourself. Find a good book you have been wanting to read for a while and get cozy. Maybe watch one of your favorite old feel-good movies. Or, make yourself a big, gourmet dinner for one.

6. Declutter and Get Organized

If you are living in disarray, that disorganization is bound to leak into other factions of your life in one way or another. If you have been feeling a little all over the place lately, take some time to rearrange your life and space to fit your needs. Reorganize your closet to make things more accessible and visible. Clear out all those old clothes you haven’t worn in years. Whatever your reorganization plan is, make sure it is an organization strategy you can stick to.
