6 strategies to get your business on Google’s SERP

It should come as no surprise that Google is one of the biggest and most used websites on the internet. It processes 8.5 billion searches every day! With all that visibility, the first search engine results page (SERP) is the place most businesses want to be.

If you want to bring a few of those 8.5 billion searches to your business’s website, here are six strategies you can use to rank on Google’s SERP.

1. Write a blog (and then another)

Blogging is one of the most powerful search engine optimization (SEO) tools you can use to get your business website to rank at the top of the Google search results. They can answer specific questions your potential customers might be asking online, and the more closely your website content matches the search query, the more likely you’ll be to rank higher in the search results.

Here are just a few of the SEO benefits they can bring to your website:

  • Answers questions from specific search queries
  • Great for keywords
  • Count as regular website updates

If you want to maximize your blog’s impact on your SERP rankings, think about the questions your customers commonly ask. Then, write about them! Just be sure to keep the content flowing. Google doesn’t like when your website sits stagnant for too long.

2. Use the right keywords

Keywords aren’t as powerful as they used to be, but they’re still an important part of SERP rankings. No, that doesn’t mean stuffing the keyword you want to rank for on your website 50 times in a row. It’s all about using the keywords naturally.

The goal is to include enough keywords so Google knows what the webpage is about but not so many that Google punishes you for keyword-stuffing. Google is smart, so don’t try to trick it. Write your website copy naturally and focus on informing readers.

To come up with keywords, think about the types of questions potential customers would type into Google. Then, use variations of those words in your articles. There are also dozens of online tools you can use to find relevant keywords for your industry.

3. Include headings and lists

Formatting is important when it comes to SEO. Google is very user-focused, and most users don’t like to read entire articles. According to research, 79% of internet users always scan webpages. They look over the page quickly to pull out important information and go on their way.

To make your content more scannable, use plenty of headings and lists on your website. Your readers (and Google) will thank you!

4. Add alt text to images

Google can’t “see” images, which is unfortunate because your website is probably filled with showing off what your business can do! By adding alt text, you can tell Google what the images are.

Alt text (short for alternative text) is a brief written description of an image. It’s not visible on the website. It’s only used by search engines and accessibility tools to understand visual media.

When Google knows you have good images on your website, it’ll rank you higher. Plus, you’ll also be able to show up in the Google image search results for even more reach!

If you don’t have any images on your website, it’s a good idea to add a few. Even if you don’t have photographs or a graphic designer on staff, you can always use small business flyer templates to create professional graphics for your website. Just don’t forget to add the alt text!

5. Make your site mobile friendly

Over 90% of global internet users access the internet using a smartphone, and websites tend to look a lot different on a small phone screen than they do on a large computer. Google knows how many people use mobile devices, so it boosts websites that are mobile friendly.

When designing your website, make sure you use a platform that offers mobile-friendly layouts. It takes a little extra work to ensure your mobile site looks as good as the desktop site, but you’ll enjoy the benefits from showing up on Google’s SERP.

6. Promote your site on multiple channels

If a website is popular and attracts lots of viewers, Google figures it has good information and increases its ranking on the SERP. So don’t just rely on your website to attract its own attention; promote it on other channels!

Promoting your business website on platforms like social media is a great way to gain viewers and boost your search engine rankings. Just make sure you use plenty of high-quality images and posts to really draw in the visitors.

If you’re not confident in your design abilities, there are plenty of marketing tools for your small business online. Even someone with horrible design taste can create professional-level flyers, banners, and posts to optimize their online presence, thanks to these marketing tools.

Grow your business with Google

Google is the place to be for businesses on the internet. It’s used by more users than any other website, so you definitely want your business to show up front and center when someone searches for something related to your industry.

Some of the best ways for businesses to make it on Google’s SERP is to write a blog, use the right keywords (and use them appropriately), use the correct formatting, add alt text to images, go mobile-friendly, and promote your website on multiple channels. Do all that, and Google will happily kick more business your way by putting your website higher in the search engine results.
